K-State Rowing Benefits from Oklahoma Scrimmage on Saturday

Mar 10, 2018 | Rowing

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Kansas State women's rowing team took advantage of the open water and developed as a team, as the Wildcats concluded their first action of the 2018 spring season in a scrimmage with the University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on Saturday.

"We had a really good training day, the first thing I would look to do is thank Coach [LeAnne] Crain and the Oklahoma staff and team for letting us come in and scrimmage against them," Head Coach Patrick Sweeney said.  "It was very important to get on the water and the good thing was I think all of our crews learned a lot and were able to take advantage of the scrimmage."

Saturday's scrimmage with Oklahoma featured two training sessions that included three Varsity 8+'s and two Varsity 4+'s for the Wildcats, with the first session that began at 8:00 a.m. and the second at 1:00 p.m. The training consisted of a variety of different racing scenarios, including concentration on starts and rowing at race pace to help improve mechanics and prepare for race experiences.

The experience against conference opponent Oklahoma also provided the Wildcats with valuable time on the Oklahoma River and their first competition against another team since competing at the Jayhawk Jamboree on October 22.

"I am really pleased with how we have prepared to this point," Sweeney said. "Going forward we will focus on mechanics and getting sharper which will come with water time, but overall I am pleased with how the team performed."

Following Saturday's scrimmage with Oklahoma, the Wildcats will take a trip out west to compete at the Hornet Invitational from March 17-18 in Sacramento, California. The Wildcats will remain in the state of California for the following week, as the team will compete in the San Diego Crew Classic on March 24-25 in San Diego, California.

"Spring camp is going to be a great week, hopefully we get some good water. That should be the start of where we really begin to go faster, week by week," Sweeney said.
