Wildcats Open Spring Camp at Hornet Invitational in Sacramento
Mar 16, 2018 | Rowing
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's rowing team will begin an 11-day expedition in California this weekend, as the team opens their spring camp with the Hornet Invitational on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, California on March 17-18.
After a productive showing at the Oklahoma Scrimmage a week ago, the Wildcats will get their first race opportunity at the Hornet Invitational, where they will face off head-to-head against Saint Mary's, Sacramento State, Gonzaga and San Diego State. The invitational is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. CT on Saturday, with an intermission at 12:00 p.m., before resuming at 5:00 p.m. Action on Sunday is slated to begin with the V8+ race at 10:00 a.m.
"We will be looking at which combinations work best in the boats," Head Coach Patrick Sweeney said in preparation for the Hornet Invitational. "What we want to see as the boats are starting to take form, are which combinations work best. We are trying to get closer and closer to what we see as the final lineups."
K-State will have a total of five boats on the water, spanning throughout 12 races between the two days. K-State will start by facing off against St. Mary's and Gonzaga during the morning session on Saturday, before racing against Sacramento State during the afternoon session. The Wildcats will then take on San Diego State on Sunday. A full schedule of events is included below.
Following the Hornet Invitational, the team will remain in Sacramento for training before heading south for the San Diego Crew Classic in San Diego, California on March 24-25.
"They realize the next step is to be on the water. Their fitness level and everything is really good," Sweeney said of the team. "But they need the water time and the mileage, so this coming week if all goes well, we can get some good mileage in and get technically better."
The Wildcats opened their spring season on March 10, where they competed in a scrimmage against the University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The scrimmage marked the first of seven spring competitions, as the team prepares for the Big 12 Championship held on May 12-13 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
