K-State aims to claim back-to-back ranked victories
MANHATTAN, Kan.– After moving up in the rankings for the second straight week and boasting this week's Big 12 Player of the Week in Maria Linares, the K-State women's tennis team will face No. 48 William & Mary at the Millie West Tennis Facility in Williamsburg, Virginia, at 10 a.m. CT on Sunday.
K-State (7-2) will face its third ranked opponent in four matches and is coming off a 4-2 win over the then-ranked No. 49 Missouri Tigers at the Mizzou Tennis Complex in Columbia, Missouri, on Sunday, February 25. The Cats claimed the doubles point, and then picked up three of five singles matches to seal their win over the Tigers.
All five of William & Mary's (7-5) losses have come against teams from the national top 25. The Tribe will face off with George Washington on Saturday before facing K-State on Sunday. William & Mary are led by the nation's 86th-ranked player, Rosie Cheng. The sophomore is hoisting a 6-5 record playing primarily from the No. 1 singles position, including a 2-4 record against nationally ranked opponents.
After claiming the doubles point against Missouri on Sunday, K-State has now completed such a feat in six of its nine matches this season. The Cats move to 36-18 this season in doubles play.
K-State faced three of William & Mary's doubles pairings in the fall season at the Kitty Harrison Invitational in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on November 3-5, finishing 1-2 against the Tribe's tandems.
The Cats' lone win against William & Mary came from Anna Turco and Maria Linares topping the Tribe's Lauren Goodman and Cecily Wuenscher, 8-6, the only match K-State's pairing has played together.
Freshman Margot Decker and senior Carolina Costamagna lost to the Tribe's Clara Tanielian and Vitoria Okuyuma, 6-8. Since the matchup, K-State's duo is 6-2 and has played every match at the No. 1 doubles position. Sophomores Meghan King and Ines Mesquita dropped their match against Natalia Perry and Olivia Thaler of William & Mary, 6-8. The tandem is 2-2 this season when paired.
K-State has garnered a 76-44 record in singles play this season, including a 45-20 record from the freshmen class.
Linares, a freshman, clinched the Cats' win on Sunday, defeating Ellie Wright in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Linares looks to build on a 14-4 start to her collegiate career, adding an 8-1 record in her spring season at the Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 positions. The product of Venezuela is 13-5 in doubles play, only playing the No. 2 position.
Decker suffered her fourth loss at the No. 1 spot of the season and lost her national ranking against Mizzou's Serena Nash, 6-3, 4-6, 0-6, moving the match to a 2-1 lead for K-State. The freshman is 11-7 this season, playing all her spring matches from the No. 1 position.
Freshman Rosanna Maffei opens her career with an 11-5 record, moving to 6-3 in her spring season most recently with a straight-set victory over Missouri's Marta Oliveria, 6-1, 6-1. The freshman adds an 8-4 record in doubles play.
After muscling out a three-set win over Taylor Gruber of the Tigers, 7-6 (4), 1-6, 6-4, Mesquita improves to 16-5 this season, playing her spring matches from the Nos. 5 and 6 positions. The sophomore has claimed a 12-8 record in doubles play.
Turco has won nine of her first 12 matches in her collegiate career, playing from the Nos. 4 and 6 positions. The freshman of Italy is 11-5 in doubles matches this season.
