Wildcats Turn in Solid Marks at ESU Relays, San Francisco Distance Carnival

EMPORIA, Kansas – The K-State men's and women's track and field teams competed across the country this weekend, where four distance runners made the trip to Hayward, California to compete at the San Francisco Distance Carnival on Friday while the Wildcats claimed three event victories at the Emporia State Relays in Emporia, Kansas on Saturday.
"These meets are important for them to have an opportunity to make the conference team," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said in preparation for the weekend.
The weekend got started at the San Francisco Distance Carnival on Friday morning, where seniors Jeff Bachman, Bryan Zack, Colton Donahue and Brett Bachman competed in a crowded field of 33 runners in the second heat of the men's 10,000-meters race. Jeff Bachman led the squad, finishing in 31:01.07 to place 38th in the field of 108 runners, while Zack placed 60th in 31:46.96, Donahue finished 63rd in 31:55.80 and Brett Bachman placed 86th in 33:21.00 to round out the competition for the Wildcats.
On Saturday and back in the Sunflower State, several Wildcats made the trip to Emporia, Kansas to compete in the Emporia State Relays, where the Wildcats claimed three event victories and put in several notable performances.
Of the event victories in Emporia, sophomore Ashley Petr won both the women's discus and women's hammer throw for the Wildcats. In her first event of the day, Petr claimed the lead in the women's hammer throw on her second throw of 51.08m/167-07, before recording her best throw of 54.29m/178-01 to win the event. Freshman Taylor Latimer followed Petr with a series of solid throws in the event, finishing in third with a throw of 49.60m/162-09.
Later in the day, Petr returned to the ring to throw in the women's discus, where she was able to claim her second event victory of the day behind a throw of 48.51m/159-02 on her second throw.
In the men's 5,000 meters, freshman Ethan Powell ran a strong race for the Wildcats at the top of the field throughout the race's entirety. After starting out in the front of the pack, Powell battled with Colton Green of Rogers State down the stretch, before outlasting Rodgers behind a 1:01.96 final lap. Powell's perseverance earned him a first-place finish in his first collegiate outdoor meet for the Wildcats, finishing in 14:56.80.
Also making her outdoor debut, freshman Victoria Robinson had a strong start to the outdoor season, running 2:18.20 to place second in the women's 800 meters. Robinson split her first lap with a 1:08.95 where she was in third place, before overtaking second-place by running a 1:09.24 final lap.
In the men's 400-meter hurdles, junior Rene Perla ran a 56.29 to finish fourth overall out of the second heat.
Next, the Wildcats will focus their attention on the Jim Click Combined Events and Jim Click Shootout in Tucson, Arizona from April 5-7. The combined events portion will start off the Jim Click Shootout on April 5-6, before picking up track and field events on April 7.
