MANHATTAN, Kan. – For the second consecutive week, junior-college transfer Drew Mount was named the Big 12's Newcomer of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Mount recorded five extra-base hits in propelling K-State (7-4) to a three-game home sweep of La Salle over the weekend. The Wildcats center fielder hit his team-leading fourth home run Friday to go with two triples and drove in three in K-State's 9-3 victory. He was the first Wildcat to turn in a multi-triple game since 2013 (Ross Kivett).
In the three-game set, the Santa Clara, California, native ended the weekend hitting .545 (6-for-11) with three triples, a double and a homer for a league-best 1.455 slugging percentage. The slugger also posted five RBI and was a perfect 5-for-5 in stolen bases attempts.
The Wildcat cleanup hitter is the Big 12 leader with 16 RBI, nine stolen bases and tied with teammate Cameron Thompson for the league lead in triples (3). Mount is tied for second with four homers and third in slugging percentage (.795). Eleven of Mount's 16 runs driven in have come with two outs.
The honor is the second weekly award in Mount's Wildcat career, who is in his first season at K-State after transferring from De Anza College. He is one of five Wildcats to be named Newcomer of the Week multiple times and is the first to do so in consecutive weeks. Teammate and current sophomore Will Brennan earned the honor twice last season.
K-State continues its 14-game homestand on Tuesday as it welcomes Incarnate Word to Tointon Family Stadium for a two-game midweek series. First pitch of Tuesday's game is set for 3 p.m. Both games with the Cardinals can be seen on the ESPN app and will be live on KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM).
