Mar 07, 2018 | Baseball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State's Jake Biller blasted a grand slam and Drew Mount hit a solo homer to power the Wildcats to a 14-3, seven-inning victory over Incarnate Word at Tointon Family Stadium Wednesday.
Biller's grand slam, the first of his career, was part of an eight-run sixth inning that pushed K-State's (8-4) lead from four runs to 11 in the run-rule shortened contest. Biller, a senior from Manhattan, finished the day 3-for-4 and a career-high six runs batted in in helping the Cats win their fourth straight game.
Mount belted his team-leading fifth home run of the season in the fourth inning that extended K-State's lead three runs. Mount drove in two runs while going 2-for-3 with a double and scoring three runs with a stolen base. The junior center fielder leads the team with 18 RBI and 10 stolen bases.
The Cats brought 13 hitters to the plate in the sixth and scored seven of eight runs before an out was recorded.
K-State starting pitcher Quinton Potter held UIW (8-6) scoreless through two innings before making way for sophomore Caleb Littlejim, who pitched the next four innings and allowed three earned runs in picking up his second win of the season.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when K-State brought 10 batters to the plate, drawing three walks, including two with the bases loaded for a four-run inning. Mount drove home Cameron Thompson with a double to right-center to open the scoring and TK McWhertor and Hanz Harker each drew bases-loaded walks before Biller's infield single.
UIW responded in the top half of the next inning by scraping across two runs on three hits, highlighted by a run-scoring single up the middle by right fielder Sean Arnold.
The Cats scored single runs in the fourth and fifth, as Mount's homer in the fourth pushed the K-State lead to 5-2 and Biller contributed a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
The Cardinals' Shea Gutierrez scored in the top of the sixth when center fielder Ridge Rogers was caught in a rundown between first and second base to complete the UIW scoring.
Senior reliever Hudson Treu finished the game with a perfect seventh inning and handed the Cats their eighth win in the last nine games.
Seven different Wildcats drove in at least one run in the game, including first baseman Trent McMaster who had a two-hit game with a double and designated hitter Jordan Maxson who had an RBI for the fourth straight contest.
UIW starting pitcher Jake Zatopek suffered his first loss of the season after allowing three runs (two earned) in two innings of work, striking out two and walking three. Five Cardinal pitchers combined to walk nine Wildcat hitters.
K-State leadoff hitter Will Brennan walked twice and singled to extend his on-base streak to 35 games. Brennan has hit safely in all 12 games this season and 13 overall, dating back to the end of last year.
The Wildcats have recorded double-digit hits in eight straight contests.
K-State continues its homestand as Mercer (10-3) visits Tointon Family Stadium for a three-game set beginning Friday at 3 p.m. The entire series can be seen on ESPN3 and the ESPN app. Fans can also listen live on KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM).
