Schultz, Smith Turn in Historic Performances at NCAA Indoor Championships
Mar 09, 2018 | Track & Field
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Sophomore Nina Schultz earned a pair of All-American honors, including a second-place finish in the women's pentathlon, while senior Terrell Smith set a new school record and earned second-team All-American honors in the men's 200-meters, as K-State concluded their indoor season at the NCAA Indoor Championships at Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium on Friday.
Schultz, a native of New Westminster, Canada, earned the best finish and most points by a pentathlete at the NCAA Indoor Championship in K-State program history, finishing second overall with 4,467 points. By placing second, Schultz has earned her third first-team All-America honors in her career and improved upon her third-place finish of 4,340 at the NCAA Indoor Championships from a year ago.
"Overall, I think that she [Schultz] had a really solid meet," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. "It is her second best [Pentathlon] total ever and she scored significantly higher than she did last year, she is just a lot better, she has had a great year."
For Smith, his ninth-place finish makes him the first K-State Indoor All-American in the 200-meters since 2013, when Carlos Rodriguez finished 14th in 21.44, and the best finish by a Wildcat at the NCAA Indoor Championship in the event in school history. Smith holds both the indoor and outdoor school records for K-State and has cemented himself among the best sprinters in K-State history.
"I think clearly that was his best race of the year. I am really pleased for him. I thought he ran really well, out of lane four, that is a new personal best and school record," Rovelto said of Smith.
Schultz got the day started in the women's pentathlon 60-meter hurdles, where she cleared the hurdles on the straightaway of Gilliam Indoor Track to finish third overall with a pentathlon-best run of 8.29. The finish earned her 1,029 points to start off the day, positioning her behind only Arkansas' Taliyah Brooks and Georgia's Louisa Grauvogel after one event.
After winning the Big 12 Indoor Championship in the high jump two weeks ago in Ames, Iowa, Schultz picked up where she left off, claiming the event win with a jump of 1.84m/6-00.50. Schultz cleared each of her first six jumps on her first attempt, before she struggled to clear 1.84m/6-00.50 on her first attempt. Battling with Brooks, Schultz cleared the height on her second attempt, before both Schultz and Brooks bowed out of the competition at 1.87m/6-01.50. Schultz positioned herself in second place after two events in the women's pentathlon with 2,093 points.
In the women's pentathlon long jump, Schultz continued to battle at the top of the pentathlon leaderboard, recording a jump of 6.21m/20-04.50 on her first attempt to place her in first in the long jump after one attempt. After missing on her final attempts, Schultz rounded out the event with a second-place finish, which positioned her in second in the pentathlon with 3,638 points going into the final event.
In the final event of the pentathlon, the 800-meter run, Schultz put together another strong performance to finish with a personal best time of 2:19.59. Schultz's 800-meter finish secured her a second-place finish, while Brooks took the title with 4,572 points.
"It is cool knowing that I am becoming a part of K-State history and hopefully I can build on that because I still have two more years," Schultz said of her performance. "Being out here again was just a good experience."
Later in the day, senior Terrell Smith hit the track for the preliminary heats of the men's 200-meters, where he broke the school record in the event for the third time this season, this time on the national stage. Making his first appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championships, Smith ran a 20.81 to finish ninth overall, earning him second-team All-America honors.
"I was feeling good when I was running, it was a phenomenal run," Smith said of his school record. "I had family come out, I had friends in the stands so there is nothing better than I can ask for."
Schultz's eight team points in the pentathlon earned the Wildcats a tenth-place finish through day one of the NCAA Indoor Championships, though neither the men or the women will compete on day two.
Friday's NCAA Indoor Championships caps off the indoor season for the Wildcats, as the team looks forward to the outdoor season beginning on March 23-24 at the Roadrunner Invitational in San Antonio, Texas. The trip to San Antonio marks the first of seven outdoor meets before the Big 12 Outdoor Championship on May 11-13.
