Mesquita Earns Academic All-Big 12 First Team Honors

The Portuguese sophomore owns an 11-4 record this spring
MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State women's tennis sophomore Ines Mesquita was recognized by the Big 12 Conference Tuesday for her outstanding academic performance, as she was named First Team Academic All-Big 12.
Mesquita, a kinesiology major, qualifies for first-team honors for having maintained at least a 3.20 grade-point average. She is one of 30 student-athletes named to the women's first team. Six second-team selections held a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
Mesquita becomes the 14th Academic All-Big 12 First Team honor under fourth-year head coach Danielle Steinberg. Steinberg has overseen three second-team selections and nine individuals have received a conference academic award in her tenure.
This season, the sophomore has posted a 21-7 record overall, with a 11-4 mark in spring competition from the Nos. 4, 5 and 6 positions. Mesquita is riding a four-match winning streak in singles, while owning a 21-12 record in doubles play this season.
K-State (14-9, 4-5 Big 12) finished the regular season in a tie for fifth place in the Big 12 standings and take the No. 6 seed into this weekend's Big 12 Championship in Austin, Texas. The Cats will face the third-seeded Texas Tech Red Raiders at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 27.
The Cats' conference record is their best since 2012 and their 14 dual victories a the most accumulated since the 2011 season.
