Cats have won a match each of the last five seasons at the Big 12 championship
MANHATTAN, Kan. – After completing its best conference record since 2012 and accumulating its most dual match wins since 2011, the 42nd-ranked K-State women's tennis team will head to Austin, Texas, to compete at the Big 12 Championship vs. No. 14 Texas Tech on Friday at 3 p.m. at the Texas Tennis Center.
The Wildcats (14-9, 4-5 Big 12) finished the regular season in a three-way tie for fifth place in the Big 12 standings (Baylor, Oklahoma), which is the highest mark under head coach Danielle Steinberg. The Cats enter as the No. 6 seed in this weekend's tournament after ending their season on a four-match skid and six-match losing streak against ranked opponents.
Since the 2012-13 season, K-State has won at least one match each year at the Big 12 Championship. Last season, K-State defeated Iowa State, 4-1, in the play-in game, and were eliminated by the Red Raiders in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championship, 0-4.
Texas Tech (18-5, 7-2 Big 12) completed its regular season in a three-way tie for second place in the Big 12 (Oklahoma State, Kansas). After defeating K-State, 4-0, on March 25, the Red Raiders won seven of their next 8 matches. Tech owns a 12-19 record against K-State all-time, and is 2-5 on neutral courts.
The Red Raiders boast five of the nation's top 125 singles players at Nos. 21, 56, 97, 115, 125, and hold a 77-32 record in singles play in dual match season. At doubles, Sarah Dvorak and Sabrina Federici are ranked No. 21 in the country with an 8-5 record as the top doubles pairing for Tech.
K-State finished its regular season with four of its singles players with double digit wins and a 66-47 (.584) record overall in the dual season. The Cats dropped 19 of their 37 matches in Big 12 competition with six of their opponents being ranked.
Margot Decker endured the top position for the Cats the entire spring season. The freshman finished the regular season on a three-match skid and held an 8-11 record with a 2-4 mark in Big 12 play.
At No. 2 singles, Maria Linares completed her first regular season with a 12-6 overall record and 5-5 mark at the No. 2 position. The freshman lost back-to-back matches to end her inaugural regular season at K-State.
Fourth-year senior Carolina Costamagna rounds out her last dual season with a 10-10 record, playing a mix of the Nos. 2, 3 and 4 positions for the Cats. The Argentinian product went 17-16 in her regular season overall.
After being inserted into the No. 4 singles position last week, Anna Turco lost her first completed match to then-99th-ranked Marina Guinart of Oklahoma State. The freshman finished her first regular season with a 9-6 record.
Freshman Rosanna Maffei finished the season on a modest two-match winning streak. The Italian product has gone 11-7 in her first season at K-State with a 2-3 mark against Big 12 opponents.
Portuguese product Ines Mesquita held down the No. 6 position most the spring season for K-State. Mesquita closed out her season with a four-match winning streak and added an 11-4 record.
