K-State’s Petr Earns First Career Big 12 Athlete of the Week Honor
Apr 05, 2018 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Behind a series of event victories in the women's hammer throw and discus at the ESU Relays on Saturday, K-State sophomore Ashley Petr was named the Big 12 women's Athlete of the Week on Thursday, becoming the eighth Wildcat to win the Big 12 Athlete of the Week in program history.
"Ashley [Petr] is starting to figure some things out in both of her outdoor events, and she had a couple of nice personal bests last weekend," Assistant Coach Greg Watson said of Petr's performance.
The honor marks Petr's first Big 12 Athlete of the Week recognition in her career, as she becomes just the second sophomore in K-State program history to win the Outdoor Athlete of the Week as a sophomore.
Petr accumulated 20 points in her two events at the ESU Relays, in which she claimed victories in the women's hammer throw and women's discus. The sophomore from Hastings, Nebraska got her day started in the women's hammer throw, where she got off to a hot start by claiming the lead on her second throw of 51.08m/167-07. On her final two throws, Petr improved upon her initial mark, throwing the winning toss of 54.29m/178-01 to win the event by nearly three meters.
Later in the day, Petr returned to the ring to compete in the women's discus, where she threw 48.51m/159-02 on her second attempt to win the event.
Petr's showing at the ESU Relays marked her first outdoor appearance for the Wildcats, after competing at the University of Nebraska-Kearney as a freshman. Petr will look to improve upon her marks this weekend at the Jim Click Shootout in Tucson, Arizona, where she will compete in the women's discus at 2:30 p.m. CT on Saturday.
