No. 10 K-State Women Victorious at Jim Click Shootout
Apr 07, 2018 | Track & Field
TUCSON, Arizona – The No. 10 ranked K-State women's team showed why they are amongst the nation's elite this weekend, by winning the Jim Click Shootout behind 154 points, five event victories and a school record from senior Janee' Kassanavoid in Tucson, Arizona on Saturday.
"I really enjoy team competitions, especially when you compete against quality teams like those in this meet," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. "These type of meets help prepare us for the conference championship."
The K-State men's team placed fourth overall in the team standings, scoring 100 points behind several notable performances. The Arizona men's team claimed the team victory on the men's side, scoring 171 points.
Kassanavoid set the tone early for the Wildcats, where she threw a school-record 67.38m/221-00 on her third attempt in the women's hammer throw. Kassanavoid's throw held up to win the event, breaking a school record that she set by throwing 66.97m/219-08 at the Texas Invitational in 2017.
"I have had a lot of time to focus on the outdoor season to make it by best yet," Kassanavoid said after he record-breaking throw. "Coach [Greg] Watson and I have really focused on growing in the hammer throw and working on my technique. I am really proud of my throw and I know that there is a lot left to go in the season."
Kassanavoid led the trio of women's hammer throwers to score 23 points for the Wildcats, as sophomore Helene Ingvaldsen placed second with a throw of 63.09m/207-00, followed by freshman Shaelyn Ward's mark of 54.28m/178-1 to place fourth.
"Overall the throwers had a pretty good day that was highlighted by Janee's school record," Assistant Coach and throws coach Greg Watson said after the meet. "Several of our throwers had either a new personal best or new season best. It shows that we are headed in the right direction."
In the men's hammer throw, senior Mitch Dixon continued his dominant winning streak by throwing 65.12m/213-07 to easily win the event. Dixon's big throw came on his final attempt, as he put distance between himself and the second-place finisher, Jordan Geist of Arizona, who threw 60.72m/199-02.
In the women's discus throw, the Wildcats continued the dominance in the field events, by scoring 20 points behind another event title from Shadae Lawrence, who's winning throw went 57.89m/189-11. Big 12 Athlete of the Week, Ashley Petr placed third by throwing a personal best 49.83m/163-06, while freshman Taylor Latimer threw 47.65m/156-04 to place fourth.
K-State continued the dominance on the track, where the 4x100 meter relay team of Wurrie Njadoe, A'Keyla Mitchell, Ranae McKenzie and Claudette Allen won the relay in 44.44 over Ohio State's relay that finished in 44.73.
"This year is one of the most exciting times to be on the team, being the Big 12 Outdoor Champions from last year. We are all just cheering each other on and having a good time, and trying to get another championship," Kassanavoid said.
Later in the day, senior Ranae McKenzie made her season debut in the women's 400-meter hurdles, where she got off to a hot start to the season. McKenzie won the race by running 57.81, which marks a new personal best and the eighth fastest time in the NCAA this season, entering this weekend's competitions.
Also positioning herself atop the NCAA leaderboard, junior Shardia Lawrence jumped a season-best 13.26m/43-06 in the women's triple jump on Saturday, placing her second in the event and sixth in the NCAA prior to the weekend's results.
In the men's 800 meters, junior Kurt Loevenstein and sophomore Travis Hodge set new personal bests in the half-mile. Loevenstein, who finished fifth in the event, ran 1:51.53 to lead Hodge, who finished seventh with a personal best 1:52.40.
Following the Jim Click Shootout, the Wildcats will travel to Austin, Texas for their next competition at the Texas Invitational on April 13-14. The trip to Texas marks the second of four meets in the Lonestar state this season, as the team gears up for the Big 12 Outdoor Championships in Waco, Texas on May 11-13.
