Cowboys Complete Sweep Behind Boone’s Slam
Apr 09, 2018 | Baseball
Boone came to the plate with two outs and Oklahoma State (18-11-1, 7-2 Big 12) trailing 6-4 after Cameron Thompson put K-State (15-17, 2-7 Big 12) in front with a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh.
Thompson's homer, his first of the season, gave the Wildcats their first lead of the series as they plated four in the seventh to erase a two-run hole. Thompson was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and had a team-high six hits and four RBI in the series.
The Cowboys added five more in the top of the ninth inning on four hits, highlighted by a two-run double from Michael Neustifter. OSU scored 10 runs over the game's final three innings, handing the Cats their fifth straight loss.
Neustifter went 2-for-5 with three runs driven in and catcher Colin Simpson registered three RBI and scored three times in going 2-for-3. Boone had a game-high four RBI courtesy of his eighth-inning grand slam off K-State reliever Tyler Eckberg.
Eckberg suffered the loss after 2 2/3 innings and allowing five earned runs on four hits. The sophomore right-hander struck out four before giving up the go-ahead slam.
Caleb Littlejim struck out a career-high five OSU hitters in his fifth start of the season for the Cats. Littlejim matched his career-long outing with 5 1/3 innings pitched and allowed two earned runs on two hits. He did not factor into the decision and retired seven straight Cowboys at one point.
Simpson handed the Cowboys an early 2-0 lead when he connected on a two-run homer to right field off Littlejim. Leadoff hitter Andrew Rosa reached to begin the game on an error and scored on Simpson's conference-leading ninth home run.
Back-to-back singles by Drew Mount and Trent McMaster to start the second inning cut Oklahoma State's lead in half at 2-1.
Simpson drew a leadoff walk to begin the fourth to snap Littlejim's streak of seven straight Cowboy hitters retired. He later came home on a single to left field by Neustifter, pushing OSU's lead to 3-1 after three and a half innings.
McMaster delivered his second RBI single in the sixth inning to trim K-State's deficit to a single run at 3-2. Heasley issued a pair of two-out walks to Thompson and Mount before McMaster picked up his second run driven in of the game.
The Cowboys tacked on a run courtesy of Carson McCusker's two-out double that brought home Cade Cabbiness from first, who had earlier walked, giving OSU a 4-2 lead at the seventh-inning stretch.
Will Brennan turned in a two-hit game as seven different Wildcats recorded a base hit in the game. Mount and Dylan Watts each lifted a sacrifice fly on the day.
Cowboys starter Jonathan Heasley threw six innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits and five walks issued. C.J. Varela earned the win, going 1 2/3 innings with one earned run allowed on three hits.
Oklahoma State hit .636 (7-for-11) with runners in scoring position had had six two-out RBI. K-State went 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position with four two-out RBI.
