Gandon Concludes Season at NCAA Regional

May 16, 2018 | Men's Golf

STOCKTON, Calif. – Kansas State junior men's golfer Jeremy Gandon tallied an even-par 72 during the final round of the 2018 NCAA Pacific Regional on Wednesday to tie for 30th place at the 7,239-yard Reserve at Spanos Park.

Gandon, who was making his first NCAA postseason appearance, finished with a 54-hole score of even-par 216. It tied for the third-lowest score in an NCAA event in school history as Robert Streb carded a 213 in the 2009 NCAA West Regional and Matt Van Cleave carded a 214 in the 2005 NCAA Central Regional. Also shooting a 216 was Richard Laing in the 1992 NCAA Central Regional, Joe Ida in the 2009 NCAA West Regional and Streb in the 2006 NCAA Central Regional.

A native of Charpey, France, Gandon concluded the year with a 72.72 stroke average, a new career best and the eighth-best mark in school history. He will enter his senior campaign with a 72.98 career stroke average, currently the top mark in school history.

"Jeremy played solid today and had plenty of birdie opportunities, but he couldn't convert with his wedges and putter," assistant coach Rob Murray said. "It's been a very positive end to the season for Jeremy. We look forward to him having a great summer and coming back in good form in the fall."

Gandon played the front nine at 1-under par thanks to birdies on Nos. 5 and 9, while he bogeyed No. 8. His back nine got off to a rough start with bogeys on the first two holes, but Gandon rebounded with four-straight pars followed a birdie and two more pars to conclude his season.

Oregon's Norman Xiong, rated the fifth-best player in the nation according to Golfstat, won the regional with an impressive 15-under par 201, one stroke ahead of Stanford's Brandon Wu. Charles Corner of UTEP, who was playing as an individual, tied for third place and will advance to the NCAA Championship as the top individual not on an advancing team.

Kansas won the regional at 20-under par 844, one shot better than Stanford. The Jayhawks and Iowa State, which finished third at the NCAA Pacific Regional, are two of a Big 12-record seven teams that advanced to the 2018 NCAA Championship, which will be played May 25-30, at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
