May 08, 2018 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State track and field senior A'Keyla Mitchell earned her first-career Big 12 Athlete of the Week honor, the Big 12 Conference announced on Tuesday, after setting a meet record 23.42 in the women's 200 meters at the Ward Haylett Invitational on Senior Day.
"It was really important just knowing that this was my last meet at home representing K-State," Mitchell said after her performance on Saturday. "I wanted to go out and make sure that I set a good impression for those watching in the stands."
The honor marks the first of her career for Mitchell, who is a five-time all-American and school record-holder in five events. Mitchell becomes the ninth K-State woman to earn the honor during the outdoor season in program history and the first since sophomore Ashley Petr earned the recognition earlier this season.
Mitchell's honor comes after clocking a Ward Haylett Invitational meet record of 23.42 on Saturday that led to her winning the event. Mitchell tops the previous meet record of 23.44 set by Kansas' Diamond Dixon in 2014.
In addition to her meet record, Mitchell competed in the women's 4x100 meter relay that clocked a winning time of 45.35.
Saturday marked the final home meet of Mitchell's career, as 17 seniors were recognized for senior day. Next up, the Wildcats will travel for the Big 12 Outdoor Championship on May 11-13 in Waco, Texas. The K-State women are the reigning Big 12 Outdoor Champions and will look to defend their title.
