Wildcat Trio to Compete at Jamaican National Senior Championships

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State track and field team will be represented by a trio of Wildcats at the 2018 Jamaican National Senior Championships this weekend, as sophomore Jullane Walker, and juniors Shardia Lawrence and Shadae Lawrence will compete at National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica from June 21-24.
The four-day championship kicks off on Thursday, with Walker competing in the men's 100-meter quarterfinals at 8:55 p.m. CT, with semifinals and finals on Friday. Walker will also make an appearance in the men's long jump finals, which is slated for 5:10 p.m. on Saturday.
Also in the field events, Shadae Lawrence will enter the discus ring on Friday at 7:30 p.m. for the women's discus finals, while Shardia Lawrence will round out the competition on Sunday at 5:40 p.m. with the women's triple jump finals.
In the women's discus, Shadae Lawrence is coming off a runner-up performance at the 2018 NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, where she used a big throw of 59.68m/195-10 on her final attempt to place second overall. Lawrence had the best throw of the collegiate season, throwing 62.10m/203-09 at the NCAA West Preliminary, to punch her ticket to the NCAA Championships. At the 2016 Jamaican Championships, Lawrence placed second overall with a throw of 58.95m/193-05.
On the triple jump runway, Shardia Lawrence enters the 2018 Jamaica Senior Championships with a season-best jump of 13.26m/43-06 recorded at the Jim Click Shootout on April 7. Lawrence followed her performance up by placing fourth at the Big 12 Championships in May, before placing 18th overall at the NCAA Championships. This weekend's competition marks the second appearance at the Jamaican National Championships for Lawrence, after she placed third at the event in 2016, with a jump of 13.28m/43-07. Lawrence enters competition with a career-best jump of 13.66m/44-09.75 set at the Texas Invitational in 2017.
Walker will kick the competition off for the Wildcats on Thursday, where he will race in the men's 100-meter quarterfinals. Walker enters with a season-best time of 10.29 set in the preliminary round of the NCAA West Preliminary on May 24, which is the fourth-fastest time in K-State history. In his first season with the Wildcats, Walker earned a fourth-place finish at the Big 12 Championship in the 100 meters, while also competing in the long jump.
On Saturday, Walker will return to National Stadium to compete in the men's long jump, where he boasts a season-best jump of 7.57m/24-10, recorded at the Big 12 Championship. Walker's jump earned him a sixth-place finish at the meet and secured him a qualifying spot at the NCAA West Preliminary.
In addition to the current Wildcats competing, former K-State high jumper Kim Williamson will compete at the Jamaican Senior National Championships, contesting in the women's high jump finals on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Williamson won the 2016 Jamaican Championship in the event, clearing 1.86m/6-01.25. In her time at K-State, Williamson won the 2016 NCAA Outdoor women's high jump title, clearing 1.88m/6-02.
