Neelly Named Co-Big 12 Men’s Track and Field Scholar Athlete of the Year
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Junior Brett Neelly has had an eventful 2018 campaign for the Kansas State men's track and field team, placing second at the Big 12 Championships in the shot put, competing at the NCAA Championships and most recently, being named the Co-Big 12 men's track and field Scholar Athlete of the Year, the league office announced on Friday.
Neelly, a native of Gallatin, Tennessee, is majoring in mechanical engineering at K-State, where he holds a 3.77 GPA, while making his way to his third NCAA Outdoor Championships in as many years. Neelly becomes first individual on the K-State track and field men's team to win the award.
Neelly's junior season was headlined by a personal best throw of 19.59m/64-03.25 in the men's shot put at the Texas Tech Corky/Crofoot Shootout on April 27. The throw was good to qualify Neelly for the NCAA West Preliminary in Sacramento, California, where he placed ninth to clinch a bid to the NCAA Championships.
At the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, Neelly marked his best throw on his first attempt, throwing 18.04m/59-02.25 to place 21st overall.
In addition to his NCAA Championship run, Neelly doubled in scoring at the Big 12 Championships in Waco, Texas on May 11-13, as he placed second in the men's shot put and fourth in the men's discus. Neelly recorded a throw of 19.32m/63-04.75 in the shot put, earning eight points for the Wildcats, en route to the team's highest scoring effort in K-State men's history (101 pts.).
Along with his success on the track and field team, Neelly was named to the Big 12 All-Academic team for the second time in his career this season, earning first team Academic All-Big 12 honors.
