MANHATTAN, Kan. – Following two top-5 finishes to open the 2018 K-State cross country season, senior Wildcat Joe Gorthy was named the Big 12 Conference Runner of the Week on Tuesday, becoming the first K-State male to earn the honor since Fernando Roman in 2012.
Gorthy's fourth-place performance at the Vic Godfrey Open, finishing the men's 8k race in 25:46.8, led the Wildcats to a third-place team finish with 114 points. In the first two meets this season, Gorthy has been the first Wildcat to cross the finish line, as K-State has put together a pair of impressive performances to start the season.
"Joe [Gorthy] has just continued to build each year. He has really worked hard to increase his mileage and train harder," Head Coach Ryun Godfrey said. "He was really aggressive from the start of the race on Saturday and was in the mix the whole race. It's great to see his hard work pay off."
In the season-opener at the JK Gold Classic on September 1, Gorthy placed third overall in the men's 6k race in 19:04.6, leading the Wildcats to the team victory with 25 points.
Gorthy becomes the sixth K-State male cross country runner to earn the Big 12 Runner of the Week honor and the first since Roman earned the award on September 4, 2012.
The Wildcat cross country teams will make their next appearance on September 29 at the Rim Rock Collegiate Classic in Lawrence, Kansas. The meet serves as the third competition this season and the second of two in the state of Kansas, as the teams prepare for postseason competition, beginning on October 27 with the Big 12 Championships.
