Maffei, Turco, Gheorghita Victorious on Third Day of Big 5 Challenge

FORT WORTH, Texas – Sophomores Rosanna Maffei, Anna Turco and freshman Ioana Gheorghita each picked up singles wins for Kansas State in the third round of the Big 5 Challenge at Baynard H. Friedman Tennis Center Saturday.
Turco picked up her second win of the event after she defeated Missouri's Ellie Wright, 7-5, 6-4. Maffei followed suit as she upended the Tigers' Taylor Gruber in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, for her first win of the tournament.
Turco improves her career singles record to 19-11 while Maffei pushes her singles mark to 17-11
Missouri's Serena Nash won over K-State sophomore Maria Linares, 7-6 (3), 6-3. Wildcat sophomore Margot Decker was defeated by Mackenzy Middlebrooks of MU, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (14). Junior Ines Mesquita fell to the Tigers' Lisa Fukutoku, 6-2, 7-6 (2).
Freshman Maria Ponomareva is now 1-1 to begin her K-State career, as she was overtaken by Vivien Abraham of Missouri, 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (2).
To end the night for the Cats, Gheorghita had her first win as a Wildcat against Missouri's Marta Oliveira. The first set ended 5-2, then Oliveira was forced to retire. The Cats ended Round 3 with a 3-4 singles record.
The Cats will compete in the fourth and final round of the event in Fort Worth with multiples matches on Sunday. K-State will begin play at 11:45 a.m., pending weather. Fans can find live updates and results during the tournament on the team's official Twitter page @KStateTEN.
