BLOOMINGTON, Ind.?– The Kansas State women's tennis team finished the Hoosier Fall Classic on Sunday at the IU Tennis Center in Bloomington, Indiana, going 3-1 in singles.
"Today was a better day, we were very close to going undefeated in our singles matches. It's easy to check out on the last day of an event and I'm glad that the student-athletes didn't do that today," head coach Jordan Smith said. "We are still not executing all of our shots but we're moving in the right direction. This is the best thing about playing fall tournaments, it gives our team plenty of chances to find their rhythm as we get ready for the spring season."
Freshman Maria Ponomareva kicked off the morning for the Wildcats with the first win of the day against Louisville's Raven Neely, 6-1, 6-0.
Junior Ines Mesquita and freshman Ioana Gheorghita each picked up victories on the day, as Mesquita overtook Marquette's Lesley Foe, 7-6, (2), 6-4, and Gheorghita defeated Alexia Coutino of Cincinnati, 6-1, 7-6, (5).
Sophomore Anna Turco fell to Ohio State's Mary Beth Hurley in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 3-6.
Over the three-day event, Mesquita and Turco led the way as each registered two singles victories, going 2-1. Gheorghita ended the weekend 1-2 while Ponomareva went 1-1.
In doubles, the duo of Mesquita and Turco posted a 3-1 mark over the first two days of the tournament. The freshman pairing of Gheorghita and Ponomareva went 1-2.
The Cats will now prepare for the ITA Central Regional Championships that will take place October 12-16 in Iowa City, Iowa.
