K-State Cross Country Travels to Vic Godfrey Open
Sep 05, 2018 | Cross Country
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's and women's cross country teams are set to embark on their first out-of-state road trip this season, as the Wildcats travel to Kenosha, Wisconsin to compete in the 38th annual Vic Godfrey Open on Saturday, September 8.
The meet marks the second of seven scheduled meets this season for K-State, and the first of five meets held outside of Kansas. The Vic Godfrey Open, formerly known as the Midwest Collegiate Open, was renamed in 2017 after Victor Earl Godfrey, K-State head coach Ryun Godfrey's father.
The Vic Godfrey Open begins with the men's 8k at 10:30 a.m. CT, followed by the women's race at 11:15 a.m.
The Wildcats opened their season on September 1 at the JK Gold Classic in Augusta, Kansas, where the Wildcat men placed first overall as a team by scoring 25 points, while the women's team placed second with 54 points.
"If we see the same effort that we saw last weekend, I will be pleased," Head Coach Ryun Godfrey said. "My expectations are that they put it together like they did last weekend and help each other out, that was a positive of the race, to see them run together for most of the race."
At the JK Gold Classic, the K-State men were led by senior Joe Gorthy, who placed third overall in the collegiate race, finishing with a 6k personal best of 19:04.6. Gorthy was one of six Wildcats to place in the top-15 overall, five of which were freshmen, David Lutgen (4th, 19:04.7), Jackson Schroeder (5th, 19:04.7), Cooper Schroeder (6th, 19:08.3), Charlie Parrish (7th, 19:09.2) and Dylan Brenneman (13th, 19:41.7).
The group effort was a focus for the Wildcat men entering the meet, and something that Godfrey believes can help them be successful in the future.
"I thought they did a good job of sticking together," Godfrey said after their season-opening performance. "We have a group of runners that can stick together, and I feel very good about what is coming this season."
The K-State women also put together an intriguing performance at the JK Gold Classic, finishing second overall with 54 points. The Wildcat women were led by senior Emma Wren, who finished the women's 4k fifth overall in 14:33.6, followed by sophomore Cara Melgares (6th, 14:35.6) and junior Sydney Collins (9th, 14:47.4).
Sophomore Kassidy Johnson made the biggest improvement on her time at the meet from a season ago, finishing 11th overall in 14:55.3, over 20 seconds faster than a season ago.
The Vic Godfrey Open is held at Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course and features a 5k women's race and an 8k men's race, which was the site of the NAIA National Cross Country Championships from 1976 to 2002. The Wildcats will square off with several Division I schools at the Vic Godfrey Open, including Marquette, UW-Milwaukee, UW-Green Bay, and DePaul, among others.
