Wildcats Win 20 Events, Sweep Wildcat Invitational
Jan 12, 2019 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams got 2019 off to a solid start by winning 20 individual events to sweep both the men's and the women's team competitions at the Wildcat Invitational at Ahearn Field House on Saturday.
The No. 24 ranked K-State men defeated North Texas, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, UMKC and Langston in the dual competition, while the No. 28 K-State women defeated North Texas, UMKC and Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Wildcat Invitational marked the first dual meet of the season for the Wildcats, after the K-State women ended the 2018 indoor season ranked No. 6 in the Track and Field News Dual Meet Final Rankings.
"I thought in general, for the most part, that everybody competed really well. I was pretty pleased with that," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. "There were a lot of solid marks. There were kids that had personal bests, so again, coming out here and doing that after the break is pretty good indication of what's to come."
The Wildcats got the day started in the field events, where both teams garnered five event wins, including a pair in the men's and women's triple jump. In the men's triple jump competition, sophomore Isaac Smallwood won the event with a jump of 13.64m/44-09, while freshman Clare Fallon won the women's competition with a personal best leap of 10.98m/36-00.25.
In the men's long jump, junior Aaron Booth began his K-State campaign on a high note, winning the event with a personal best jump of 7.18m/23-06.75, which he recorded on his fifth attempt.
"It was good. I am always pretty tough on myself, so I would have liked a little bit more, but it was good to bounce back and run a good race later in the day," Booth said of his performances on Saturday.
Later in the day, the Wildcats took to the track, where the Wildcats claimed victories in 15 of 21 events. In the first event on the track, sophomore Cara Melgares ran a strong mile to finish in 5:08.98, winning the event.
In the women's 60-meter hurdles, the Wildcats went 1-2-3 behind Lauren Taubert's first-place finish of 8.47, marking a new personal-best. Following Taubert, junior Ariel Okorie placed second in 8.54 and Paige Kimble placed third in 8.87.
The Wildcats also claimed first-place finishes in both the men's and women's 600-yards, where a pair of freshmen made their debuts. In the women's race, freshman Alex Ferguson won the event in 1:23.51, while freshman Antoni Hoyte-Small won the men's race in impressive fashion in 1:11.72.
In the women's 1,000 meters, sophomore Kassidy Johnson put herself into K-State history by running the eighth-fastest 1,000 meters in K-State history. Johnson, a native of Wichita, Kansas, clocked a 2:51.40 to win the event. Johnson's 2:51.40 is also the fastest time in the event since 2011, when Boglarka Bozzay ran a 2:45.91 in th event.
K-State closed out the evening with victories in the men's and women's 3,000 meters and the women's 4x400 meter relay. In the women's 3,000 meters, junior Anna Keeley put together a personal best performance of 10:46.45 to edge her competitors, while sophomore Ethan Powell ran away with the men's race, finishing in 8:40.52.
In the women's 4x400 meter relay, the team of Lauren Taubert, Ranae McKenzie, Akia Guerrier and Lavaun Stephenson registered the victory for the Wildcats, clocking a time of 3:45.71.
Next up, the Wildcats will travel to Lawrence, Kansas to compete in the Sunflower Triangular on Friday, January 18 against in-state rivals Kansas and Wichita State. The fifth installment of the meet will also be streamed live on ESPN+.
Admission to the Sunflower Triangular is free. Visiting teams and guests are encouraged to bring canned goods which will be donated to the "Just Foods" organization located in Lawrence, which is a food back for families in need. For more information, click here.
