Shardia Lawrence Tabs First-Career Big 12 Athlete of the Week Honor

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State Track and Field senior Shardia Lawrence earned her first-career Big 12 Athlete of the Week honor, the league office announced on Wednesday, after jumping the No. 3 triple jump mark in the NCAA at the Razorback Invitational on Saturday.

Lawrence, of St. Catherine, Jamaica, reached a season-best 13.58m/44-06.75 on her second-attempt on Saturday, which ranks third in the NCAA, first in the Big 12 and 20^th in the world this season. Lawrence had an impressive day overall on the triple jump runway, breaking the 13-meter barrier on four of her jumps.

"I think it shows Shardia's hard work and dedication that she has put in to this point," Assistant Coach Vincent Johnson said of Lawrence's performance. "It's good for her confidence and it's a good stepping stone to get where we want her to get this season."

Lawrence's Athlete of the Week honor marks the first of her career and the first Wildcat to claim the honor this season. Her performance at Saturday's Razorback Invitational is the second-best in her career, as she already holds the school record in the triple jump of 13.75m/54-01.50 set at the Tyson Invitational in 2017.

With her performance at the Razorback Invitational on Saturday, Lawrence is in good-standing for the NCAA Indoor Championships in March, which accepts the top-16 individuals in the NCAA in each event.
