Wildcats Finish Tied For 12th at Jim West Challenge

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Through six holes of the third round, K-State had been sinking birdies and climbing up the leaderboard from 10th to 6th, but the Wildcats shot a combined 16-over on the front nine to fall back to 12th after shooting a closing round of 301 (+13) at the Jim West Challenge Monday.
Chloe Weir (-1), Niamh McSherry (-2), and Reid Isaac (-1) all charged out to scores under par headed into the turn, but the rally fizzled as K-State posted its highest round in the finale at Kissing Tree Golf Club and fell two spots to 12th after shooting 280-289-301--870 (+6).
"We just did not execute well over the last nine," K-State head coach Kristi Knight said. "They did a lot of good for 45 holes."
Weir fell from 12th place to tied for 22nd after shooting 2-over 72 in round three. She sank four birdies but two bogeys on No. 2 and 6, and a double bogey on No. 5 prevented her third round under par. Still, the redshirt senior finished 3-under 213 for the tournament.
No. 5 haunted junior McSherry as well, who shot a triple bogey on the hole. McSherry carded four birdies during the round and was bogey free on the back nine of the course, but finished 4-over on the front to place her at even 216, dropping two spots to tie for 31st.
Freshman Haley Vargas fell twelve spots to tie for 51st (221) carding a 5-over 77 after a 3-under 69 round two on Monday. Reid Isaac improved her place on the leaderboard moving three spots up to tie for 61st (225) matching her round two score at 4-over 76. Sophomore Heather Fortushniak shot 9-over 81 and finished three shots behind Isaac (228) to place her tied for 69th.
"It was disappointing but it was not due to a lack of effort," Knight said. "They played well for 45 holes. We have to build on that and clean up the lost shots."
No. 15 Mississippi (836) pulled away from the competition, claiming the team title and finished ten shots ahead of second place Texas Tech (846). Texas State's Sasikarn Somboonsup (206) shot the lowest score of round three (5-under 67) to edge Mississippi's Julia Johnson (207) by one shot and grab the individual title.
The Wildcats will close the fall slate when they travel to Los Cabos, Mexico next for Battle at the Beach starting Friday, Nov. 1.
