Tough Start Drops K-State on the Road
Oct 24, 2019 | Soccer
FORT WORTH, Texas – In a rare morning match, TCU dashed out with a pair of early goals on K-State to propel the Horned Frogs to a 4-0 win over the Wildcats at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium on Thursday morning.
The time of the match was adjusted due to worsening weather conditions throughout the day in the Fort Worth area.
K-State head coach Mike Dibbini did not feel the adjusted time was the reason for the defeat.
"Today's match was just a little bit different playing a morning game, even though we practice in the mornings. The score really isn't an indication of just how close the overall match was in terms of the run of play. They just beat us in the key moments on set pieces and they punished us for that."
K-State (3-11-2, 1-6-0 Big 12) held a narrow 18-17 edge in total shots, while TCU (10-5-1, 4-2-1) had a 10-7 lead in shots on goal. The Horned Frogs also held the advantage in corner kicks, 6-4. In the first two meetings between the schools, K-State combined for seven total shots against TCU.
With their 18 shots on Thursday, K-State surpassed the school record for total shots in a season with 248. The previous record was set last season of 236 and the Wildcats have improved their total shots in each season of their existence.
The 18 total shots also tied for the second-most shots in a Big 12 match in program history and a season-high for K-State in a league match this season.
"We are creating a lot of chances offensively and we are getting opportunities, we are just not imposing our will in the box to execute those chances and we have to be better in those moments," said Dibbini about K-State's offensive attack.
"Those are the key moments that will separate us from being good to a lot better. Looking at this game, it was two halves. We just had misfortune in the first half. We gave up some uncharacteristic goals that kind of deflated us in the first half. We regrouped and played a much better second half. Our identity in the attack is there. We did a good job in playing the way we wanted to play, it was unfortunate that we didn't get the bounces that would make a difference."
K-State (3-11-2, 1-6-0) registered the first threat of the morning, as Maddie Souder rung the crossbar in the second minute with a shot from almost 30 yards.
TCU (10-5-1, 4-2-1 Big 12) opened the scoring in the third minute off a corner kick. Grace Collins attempted the corner and found the head of Tatum Condrey at the far post. Condrey played the header back toward the K-State six-yard box. Messiah Bright pounced on the ball and tapped it into the open frame.
The Horned Frogs went in front 2-0 in the eighth minute off another corner kick. Collins again attempted the kick and found the head of Condrey at the far post, who outjumped the K-State defense for the goal.
TCU boosted its first half lead to 3-0 in the 30th minute. Bright sent a rocket from around 20 yards from the right post and finished inside the left post.
The Horned Frogs added one more goal before the first half expired. TCU's Yazmeen Ryan intercepted a ball near midfield and threaded a through ball to Haley Mallion who finished from 12 yards.
In the second half, K-State saw quality shot attempts from Aly Rocha, Chloe Fisher and Carly McConville saved by TCU goalkeeper Emily Alvarado. The Wildcats finished the second half with a 10-6 advantage in total shots.
K-State will host West Virginia in the home finale on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Sunday's match will feature a pre-game ribbon cutting for Buser Family Park and a post-game celebration of the 2019 seniors: Katie Cramer, Laramie Hall, Emma Malsy, Aly Rocha and Ashley Zane. The entire weekend is also Alumni Weekend, as K-State's soccer alums from the previous three seasons are invited to return for the weekend.
Sunday's match will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+, as Brian Smoller (play-by-play), Oscar Montenegro (analyst) and Anna Christianson (sideline). Both matches will also be available on 101.5 KROCK in Manhattan and for free at kstatesports.com.
