Oct 06, 2019 | Tennis
TULSA, Okla. – Junior player Maria Linares moved on to the Qualifying Round at the ITA All-American Championships with a gutsy victory in the Round of 64 at the LaFortune Tennis Center on Sunday (October 6).
Taking on Illinois' Alexandra Belaya in the Pre-Qualifying Round, Linares pulled away with her third three-set victory of the weekend with a score line of 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Linares, who was ranked No. 106 on the preseason Top 125 singles' list, will play Duke's Chloe Beck on Monday for a chance to move on to the Round of 32 in the tournament.
"This is a great start by Maria", stated Head Coach Jordan Smith. "You never know what to expect in the first tournament of the season for any of the players, especially a tough tournament like this one. Maria came back this morning after her battles from yesterday and pulled out another thriller. Seeing her advance to the next portion of the tournament is incredible. This is great for the program because we want the team to have individual goals along with our team goals."
For the other Wildcats, sophomore Karine-Marion Job and junior Margot Decker were both scheduled to compete in the consolation rounds in singles play but those matches were cancelled due in part to rain delays.
In addition to Linares' singles match, doubles action will start on Monday at the ITA All-American Championships with the pairings of Linares and Job and Decker and Anna Turco.
