Nov 18, 2019 | Tennis
MANHATTAN, Kansas. – The Kansas State junior doubles team of Margot Decker and Anna Turco recently ascended into the ITA Top 60 rankings, grabbing a spot at No. 54. This is the first time both Decker and Turco have earned spots in the ITA Top 60 for doubles play.
During the 2019 fall season, the duo accumulated a 4-4 record in three competitions. The pairing's biggest win came back at the ITA All-American Championships when they took down Duke's Chloe Beck and Meible Chi with a set score of 8-1. Beck and Chi are currently tabbed at No. 35 in the latest ITA Top 60.
"Big congrats to Anna (Turco) and Margot (Decker) for finishing the fall ranked in doubles," said head coach Jordan Smith. "They have been a pair since last season and did a solid job of holding down our No. 1 doubles position. The definite highlight of their partnership was the run they had last month at the (ITA) All-American Championships. This will keep Margot and Anna on track to achieve their goal of qualifying for the NCAA Doubles in May. I look forward to seeing them and our team reach higher goals in the spring."
This marks the first time since February 11, 2014 that any K-State doubles pairing has reached the ITA Top 60 doubles ranking. The last duo to claim this honor was former Wildcats Petra Niedermayerova and Amina St. Hill.
With their performance over Beck and Chi, Decker and Turco became the first of two pairings to advance to the Qualifying Round in doubles play at the ITA All-American Championships in school history.
Competing with one another in the Spring 2019 season, the pairing of Turco and Decker would rack up a 10-11 record primarily out of the No. 1 spot for the Wildcats.
For Decker, this is the second time she has entered the ITA rankings, as she would climb her way into the ITA Top 125 rankings for singles play back on September 11, 2018, nabbing the No. 111 spot.
A few months back on September 17, junior Maria Linares moved inside the ITA Top 125 rankings for singles play, holding a spot at No. 106.
With the completion of the Fall 2019 campaign, K-State will now turn its focus to the Spring 2020 season. The Wildcats will open spring play with a home match against Penn State on January 18.
