Mar 28, 2026 | Tennis
The Wildcats will continue on the road for the last two away matches
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah- The K-State women's tennis team competed in the second match in Utah on Saturday (March 28) in a tough 4-1 match against Utah at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center.
#73 K-State (5-10, 2-7 Big 12) claimed the first doubles and singles matches against #33 Utah (14-5, 7-2 Big 12) but it wasn't enough as the team fell behind on the remaining courts. The Wildcats are now 1-1 against the Utes in conference match ups.
Freshman Sasha Kyselova and sophomore Chanel Rustemova quickly won the first doubles match of the day, 6-1 over Dylan Lolofie and Kamea Medora in the no. 3 spot. The duo is now 5-4 in conference play.
The Cats battled on the two remaining courts but could not secure any more wins. Junior Maralgoo Chogsomjav and freshman Martaa Chogsomjav, ranked #54 in doubles, came back from behind against Sara Akid and Emma Valletta in the no. 1 position but it was not enough, the pair falling 4-6. Freshmen Varvara Bernovich and Diana Smolinska fell short 3-6 against Emma Kamper and Emmie Moore in the no. 2 spot.
Bernovich quickly won the first singles match of the day in the no. 6 position, to earn the Cats' lone point. Facing Hayley Roberts, Bernovich won the first set and clinched the match as she left her opponent scoreless in the second at 6-2, 6-0.
Martaa faced a tough first set against another ranked opponent, #121 Kamper, in the no. 1 spot. Going back and forth, they reached a tiebreaker where Martaa scored just two more points in a 2-7 decision. In the second set she started to lose steam, only able to string together one point in a 6-7 (2-7), 1-6 final score.
Rustemova and Smolinska both lost in similar scoring matches, in the no. 5 and 3 courts, respectively. Competing against Valletta, Rustemova dropped a close first set at 4-6 while just two points in the next set wasn't enough as she fell 4-6, 2-6. While facing Moore the scores were reversed for Smolinska, attempting to fight back in the second set but to no avail at 2-6, 4-6.
Maralgoo quickly won her first set in the no. 2 position against Akid before going unfinished in three sets. Only allowing her opponent one point in the first set, Martaa fell just short in the next at 4-6 before ending the match at 6-1, 4-6, 3-3.
Kyselova also went unfinished in her match against Kaila Barksdale in the no. 4 spot. She dropped the first but kept up with her opponent in the second set leading to a high scoring match when it ended at 3-6, 5-5.
K-State will continue on the road next week for the final away matches of the spring, first on April 3 against #21 UCF (13-3, 6-2 Big 12) in Orlando, Fla., at 5 p.m. CT, and then at #43 Houston (13-4, 4-4 Big 12) on April 5 at 1 p.m., in Houston, Texas.

On the competitiveness of the Big 12 Conference…
"Disappointed in our performances this weekend. We're so lucky that we're in a conference that is competitive nationally and has a lot of ranked teams. One win can make a difference, which means there is always a reason to show up and compete. Unfortunately, that wasn't the consistent mindset from the entire group on both days. If you're going to be in this league then you have to want it more. Something this young team needs to invest in more."
