TEMPE, Ariz. – The Kansas State's women's tennis team bounced back with singles victories over three Big Ten opponents to highlight action on day two of the ASU Invitational on Saturday at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
Senior Ines Mesquita, junior Margot Decker and sophomore Karine-Marion Job all claimed victories for K-State in singles play. Mesquita took down Ohio State's Cindy Chen in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, to give K-State its first win of the day. Decker would then tack on another win with a three-set victory against Lera Patuik of Michigan, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Job would then finish the day for the Wildcats in singles competition with a commanding two-set victory over the Michigan's Lanie Van Linge, 7-6, 6-3.
K-State has now defeated three opponents from Michigan over the last two days, which includes junior Anna Turco's victory over Michigan's Chiara Lommer, who currently sits at No. 26 in the ITA national rankings, on Friday. Turco couldn't keep the momentum going on day two, dropping a three-set match to Ohio State's Irina Cantos Siemers in singles play, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles play, Turco and Decker took their set to a tiebreaker against ASU's Sammi Hampton and Texas Tech's Isa Di Laura but ended up falling by a score of 6-7 (5). Job and Mesquita took on the Sun Devil pairing of Savannah Slaysman and Ilze Hattingh, dropping it 2-6.
Through two days at the Whiteman Tennis Center, K-State has recorded four wins in singles play.
"It was a better day from everyone today," said head coach Jordan Smith. "We talked a lot last night about where the breakdown was in our performance. Most of it centered around slow starts and wanting to ease their way into the matches. We didn't have any of that today. Each of them came out with higher energy and a better idea of enforcing their game styles. Getting wins in three out of four singles against teams from Ohio State and Michigan was great. We've definitely found our base and need to see if we can add on to it tomorrow."
The Wildcats conclude action at the ASU Invitational on Sunday, which will conclude their fall season.
