Track and Field Opens 2019-20 Season with Two Home Meets This Weekend
Dec 11, 2019 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams will begin the 2019-20 indoor campaign this weekend with a pair of home meets this weekend at Ahearn Field House. The Carol Robinson/Attila Zsivoczky Winter Pentathlon will kick off the indoor season on Friday, while the K-State Winter Invitational will follow on Saturday.
"Both of our teams have the potential to be pretty darn good this season," said Director of Track and Field Cliff Rovelto. "We return a number of conference and national scorers. We also have new folks who are very capable of contributing significantly. However, if we are to contend for conference championships and high NCAA team finishes, we must continue to work hard. Right now, we are not good enough. Over the next couple of months, if we continue to make progress we can contend. I look forward to seeing how we accept the challenge."
The two home meets this weekend will be the first of four meets for the indoor season at Ahearn Field House. Admission to the events are free.
The Carol Robinson/Attila Zsivoczky Winter Pentathlon kicks off at 10:30 a.m. CT, while the K-State Winter Invitational begins on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. CT.
The pentathlon features a five-event men's and women's competition, including the 60-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and 800 meters for the women and 1.000 meters for the men. This year marks the 19th-consecutive running of the Carol Robinson/Attila Zsivoczky Winter Pentathlon, dating back to 2001. However, the KSU Pentathlon dates back to 1992, when it debuted as the Wildcat Pentathlon/Septathlon.
The K-State Winter Invitational on Saturday features a dual-scored meet between schools, predominantly Kansas City in past years. The Wildcats had productive outings in the women's field in particular a season ago, recording a 5-1 record in dual-meet competitions, ranking them No. 6 in the country by Track and Field News.
Last year at the Winter Invitational, former Wildcat Brett Neelly would go on to break the meet record in the shot put competition, launching a throw of 20.15/66-01.5. Neelly's throw would snap a 37-year mark set by Ray Bradley back in 1981.
The Wildcats will look to keep ascending to greater heights with three All-Americans returning from the 2018-19 indoor season, which includes seniors Aaron Booth and Lauren Taubert in the pentathlon as well as NCAA high jump champion Tejaswin Shankar, who returns to K-State for his junior season after receiving Second Team All-American honors at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Championship. Booth and Taubert would both claim the top scores in last year's Carol Robinson/Attila Zsiovczky Pentathlon.
K-State will be made up of 35 upperclassmen and 33 underclassmen for the 2019-20 season. The distance runners for each team are the most by event, as the men's team is home to 14 runners while the women's squad has 11 runners for the season.
K-State returns two Big 12 Champions in the field as Shankar brought home a title in the high jump competition, while senior thrower Helene Ingvaldsen grabbed a first-place finish in the weight throw event. The women's team finished third overall with 102 points at the Big 12 Championships in Lubbock, Texas while the men's team finished eighth overall with 56 points.
In each of the past 10 seasons, K-State has sent at least one individual to the NCAA Indoor Championships, while the men's side is currently riding a streak of 19 seasons for participants. For the last six years, the Wildcats have produced a champion on either the men's or women's side as well at the Big 12 Championship.
Live results for the meet will be provided by Heartland Timing and can be found here. More information on the meet, including a full schedule of events records and more can be found on kstatesports.com by clicking here.
After Saturday's competition, K-State will next head to Lexington, Kentucky for the Jim Greene Invitational beginning on Friday, January 10.
