Multiple Wildcats Earn First Place Finishes at K-State Winter Invitational Saturday
Dec 14, 2019 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kansas – Multiple Kansas State Wildcats climbed their way into the all-time indoor top-10 leader boards while senior Travis Hodge would break the meet record in the men's mile race to highlight action at the K-State Winter Invitational on Saturday at Ahearn Field House.
Hodge would top an 11-year mark set back in 2008 by one second in a time of 4:11.54, surpassing the previous mark of 4:12.26 set by Michael Pierce at the 2008 K-State Winter Invitational.
"It is pretty awesome", said Hodge. "I haven't done a whole lot here in regards to meet records and top 10's and to be able to do that was pretty cool."
Hodge's meet record was among 11 first-place finishes by the Wildcats on Saturday, which included Ashley Petr in the weight throw, Taylor Latimer in the women's shot put, Janique Burgher and Kyle Alcine in the high jump, Oscar Smith in the men's 60-meter hurdles, Alex Ferguson in the women's 600 yards, Jullane Walker in the men's 300 meters, Emma Lucas in the women's mile run and both 4x400-meter relay teams.
"I think we did have some quality marks today", said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto on the meet. "In large case, some of those marks were solo marks. Some of the middle-distance kids had some really nice openers. Alex (Ferguson), Kassidy (Johnson) in particular, Travis (Hodge) in the mile. Those were all pretty good openers. I also thought the relays were pretty solid. We were missing a leg or two in both those relays in what it will be down the road. I thought those were pretty good times with who we ran today and some people found out that they were running a particular leg five minutes before the race and they did a nice job."
Many other Wildcats would crack into the top 10 for the meet as well for specific events as Ashley Petr would climb up in the weight throw competition standings after launching a throw of 20.14m/66-1.0.
Freshman Emma Lucas and sophomore Kassidy Johnson both claimed first place finishes in their distance events while climbing the indoor all-time leaderboards. Johnson would win the 1000-meter race at a time of 2:50.89, which bumps her time up one second from her previous best at the 2019 Wildcat Invitational. Lucas would pull out a close finish in the women's mile race over teammate Cara Melgares by less than a second, posting a time of 5:05.60.
Junior Taylor Latimer continued her dominance in the shot-put event, grabbing a first-place finish with a throw of 16.12m/52-10.75 while competing unattached.
During the men's high jump competition, junior Kyle Alcine would go up against former K-State Wildcat and Olympian Erik Kynard for the top spot. Both Alcine and Kynard would both tie at a mark of 2.15m/7-0.05 for first place.
Freshman Oscar Smith and senior Jullane Walker both ran well in their respective events as Smith completed the 60- meter hurdles in 7.87 seconds, grabbing top honors in the race. Walker blew by the competition as he won the Men's 300 meters event with a time of 34.44 seconds.
Coming down to the final event of the day in the 4x400 meter relays, both K-State (A) teams in the men's and women's races would pull out the victories. On the men's side, freshman Gabriel Louw, sophomore Antoni Hoyte-Small, freshman Donovan Turner and freshman Tim Lambert would cross the line at 3:16.80 for first place. The women's group made up of sophomore Lavaun Stephenson, senior Lauren Taubert, sophomore Alex Ferguson and senior Akia Guerrier all took home top honors in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:49.66.
With the conclusion of the K-State Winter Invitational, the Wildcats will now head into the 2020 schedule as the team will travel to Lexington, Kentucky for the Jim Greene Invitational on Friday, January 10 through Saturday, January 11.
