Late Runs Hand CBU 7-6 Win Wednesday

Feb 20, 2019 | Baseball

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – California Baptist answered K-State's three-run eighth with a pair of runs in the home half of the inning, lifting the Lancers to a 7-6 victory at James W. Totman Stadium Wednesday.

K-State (2-3) and CBU (5-0) exchanged leads four times in the game, and the Wildcats took a one-run lead after a two-run double by Terrence Spurlin before Zach Kokoska's RBI single capped the three-run eighth. The Lancers retook the lead when Luke Navigato scampered home on a wild pitch from reliever Caleb Littlejim with two outs in the eighth.

"When you're up late, you've got to beat people," head coach Pete Hughes said after the game. "It's as simple as it gets. But I love the way our guys battled. They scrapped, they were resilient. We're getting there. We have to learn to be comfortable in those situations and I think that's what we are doing."

K-State's three-run eighth erased a two-run deficit and came on the heels of the Lancers' taking a 5-3 lead in the seventh. CBU first baseman John Glenn drove in two with a two-out single off reliever Jaxon Passino.

The Cats earlier tied the game with a two runs in the fifth inning after a two-out error by Navigato. Navigato's throwing error allowed Thomas Hughes and Will Brennan to score, who both singled in the inning.

Brennan, Hughes and freshman Dylan Phillips each had two hits in the game. Spurlin had a team-high two RBI.

K-State began the game with three straight base hits. Hughes led off with a double, Littlejim singled and Brennan singled to plate the game's first run.

Navigato tied the game with a leadoff home run in the next half inning.

In the bottom of the third, Lancers catcher Andrew Bash delivered a two-out, two-run single to break the tie and put CBU ahead 3-1. K-State starter Joey Martin walked three hitters in the inning and CBU got leadoff single from Jeff Bruyntjens.

Martin went 2 2/3 innings and allowed three earned runs on three hits an allowed three walks. Martin, making his first collegiate start, struck out two in a no-decision effort.

Passino suffered the loss after yielding four runs (one earned) one four hits over 1 2/3 innings. The sophomore reliever struck out a pair.

Senior Brogan Heinen tossed 3 1/3 innings of shutout baseball, allowing just two hits with two strikeouts in relief of Martin.

K-State stays on the west coast as it will begin the Tony Gwynn Legacy in San Diego on Friday. The Cats will meet Fresno State, Utah and host San Diego State in the three-day event. Coverage will be available all weekend on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) with live audio at K-StateSports.com/watch.
