No. 16/15 K-State Falls to No. 15/16 Kansas, 64-49 in Sunflower Showdown

LAWRENCE, Kan. – No. 16/15 Kansas State was held in check to a Big 12-low 32.1 percent shooting and the second-fewest points in Big 12 play this season, as the Wildcats fell 64-49 to No. 15/16 Kansas in the 291st Sunflower Showdown at Allen Fieldhouse on Monday.
K-State (21-7, 11-4 Big 12) splits the season series in the Sunflower Showdown with the Jayhawks, as K-State took the first game, 74-67, on February 5, while the Wildcats have lost 13-straight at Allen Fieldhouse.
The Wildcats had a tough day shooting, connecting on a Big-12 low 32.1 percent (18-of-56) from the field, while getting called for 17 fouls, including 9 in the first half. The 49 points scored by the Wildcats were the third-fewest scored this season and the third time K-State has been held under 50 points this season.
Kansas (21-7, 10-5 Big 12) owned the rebounding battle, 41-31, the most rebounds allowed since Creighton collected 45 in the second round of the 2018 NCAA tournament. As a team, Kansas shot 38.9 percent (21-of-54) from the floor with three individuals in double-digits scoring, including Dedric Lawson's game-high 18 points.
Senior Kamau Stokes was the only Wildcat to score in double-digits, as the Wildcats are 0-3 in games where one player scored in double-digits this season. as Stokes scored 12 points on 5-of-10 from the field and 2-of-5 from beyond the arc. Two others – senior Dean Wade and junior Xavier Sneed – added 8 points each.
Barry Brown, Jr. saw his 14-game double-digit scoring streak come to an end on Monday, registering a season-low 4 points on 1-of-8 shooting, which was his lowest point total since being held scoreless against Baylor quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championship on March 9, 2017.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the 291st edition of the Dillon's Sunflower Showdown, the Wildcats had the early advantage due in part to stout defense, as the Jayhawks were unable to connect on their first 7 shots from the field. K-State grabbed an early 5-0 lead at the 16:35 mark on a 3-pointer from junior Makol Mawien as the shot clock expired.
It wasn't until the 15:25 mark of the first half when Kansas found its first points on an and-one from Lawson. After Kansas got on the board, junior Xavier Sneed rattled off 5-straight points to put K-State up 10-3, forcing Kansas to call a timeout with 14:12 left in the first half.
After the timeout, Kansas responded by hitting a pair of 3-pointers to bring the score to 10-9 with 13 minutes left to play in the half. The Jayhawks would later take over the lead on a pair of free throws at 11-10 at the 11:51 mark.
The teams traded punches after the midway point of the half, before Kansas went on an 8-2 run to gain a 23-17 lead with 6:35 left in the first half. At that point, Kansas scored 12 of its 23 points from beyond the arc.
The Jayhawks brought their lead to 7 points just before the half, as the Wildcats trailed 34-27 at the break. K-State was led by Sneed's 8 points, as the Wildcats connected on 45.5 percent (10-of-22) from the floor in the first half. Kansas shot 41.7 percent (10-of-24) from the floor in the first half, while scoring on 9-of-11 from the line, as K-State drew 11 fouls, compared to Kansas' 2 in the first half. Lawson led the Jayhawks at the break with 9 points.
The start of the second half went Kansas' way, as K-State missed on its first six shots from the field. Kansas' Mitch Lightfoot made it difficult for the Wildcats to get a shot of, totaling two blocks in the first two minutes of the second half, as the Jayhawks led 38-27 with 18:13 left in the game.
Trailing by 14 in the second, K-State chipped away at the Kansas lead by connecting on a pair of 3-pointers, with the first from Stokes, followed by senior Dean Wade to bring the score to 41-33 with 15:16 remaining. The 3-pointer from Wade marked his first points of the game.
Despite K-State drawing to within single-digits, Kansas was able to respond by scoring five-straight points to grab a 46-33 lead with 13:40 remaining.
With 8:51 left in the game, Kansas found its largest lead of the game at 16, when Charlie Moore connected on a 3-pointer to bring the score to 56-40. With the double-digit lead, Kansas was able take the lead to the buzzer, as the Jayhawks defeated the Wildcats, 64-49.
