Ferguson’s 600 Meter Victory Leads to First-Career Athlete of the Week
Feb 06, 2019 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State Track and Field freshman Alex Ferguson claimed her first-career Big 12 Athlete of the Week honor, the league office announced on Wednesday, after winning the women's 600 meters in 1:30.35 at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Nebraska on Saturday.
"We've been very conservative in training with Alex because of a couple injuries she has had in the recent past, so I am very impressed with her race performances," Assistant Track and Field coach Ryun Godfrey said. "Hopefully in the near future we can continue to progress with our intensity in training. I think Alex has a very bright future."
Ferguson ran the entire three laps around the Bob Devaney Sports Complex track in complete control, leading from the gun, leading to her finish in 1:30.35, more than two seconds in front of the second-place finisher. Ferguson's time ranks No. 1 in the Big 12 this season and No. 8 in the NCAA, while coming in as the second-fastest 600 meter time in K-State school history, just short of Sonia Gaskins' 1:29.92 ran at the New Mexico Team Invitational in 2015.
Ferguson's Athlete of the Week honor is the first of her career and the second for the Wildcats in as many weeks. Last week, senior Shardia Lawrence won the award by jumping 13.58m/44-06.75 in the women's triple jump at the Razorback Invitational.
Ferguson also becomes the 15th individual to win Big 12 Athlete of the Week on the women's side during the indoor season and only the fourth K-State freshman to win the award.
