Wildcats Grab Three Event Wins on Day One of Texas Tech Shootout

LUBBOCK, Texas – On day one of the Texas Tech Shootout, the K-State men's and women's track and field teams grabbed three event victories in the women's triple jump, weight throw and 800 meters, as the Wildcats concluded a strong first day of competition at the Sports Performance Center in Lubbock, Texas on Friday.
The Wildcats also claimed two new meet records, as junior Helene Ingvaldsen improved upon her meet record in the weight throw from a year ago, while freshman Kassidy Johnson brushed past the women's 800 meters record previously held by Alethia Marrero.
The first day of competition got started for the Wildcats in the women's weight throw, where K-State continued its success in the event this season. Ingvaldsen took the lead on her first throw of 20.24m/66-05, and never gave it up, as she later improved on her final throw by tossing 20.79m/68-02.50, winning her the event and standing as the new meet record. Sophomore Shaelyn Ward and junior Ashley Petr placed fifth and sixth overall, with Petr setting a new personal best of 18.88m/6-11.50.
In the women's triple jump, senior Shardia Lawrence continued to post impressive jumps on Friday, leading to a winning jump of 13.41m/44-00. Lawrence already stands at No. 3 in the NCAA in the event, with her jump of 13.58m/44-06.75 set at the Razorback Invitational. In addition to Lawrence winning the event, junior Konstantina Romaiou made great improvement to her previous personal best of 12.90m/42-04, by recording a mark of 13.05m/42-09.75 to place her sixth on Friday.
On the track, Johnson was joined by freshman Alex Ferguson in the women's 800, where the pair of Wildcats jumped out to an early lead and built upon it. Johnson went on to win the race in 2:08.88 to claim a new meet record previously held by Marrero (2:09.61), while Ferguson finished second in 2:09.62, which is good for eighth all-time in K-State indoor history. Sophomore Cara Melgares also set a new personal best in the event, running 2:18.48 to finish seventh.
In the men's 800 meters, senior Kurt Loevenstein ran a composed race out of the first heat, running a new personal best 1:50.87 to finish third overall, while junior Travis Hodge clocked a 1:53.45 to place seventh. With his time, Loevenstein moves into ninth all-time in K-State indoor history. Freshman Dylan Brenneman and junior Noah Stevenson raced out of heat two, where they finished 12th and 15th, respectively.
On the Texas Tech straightaway junior Ariel Okorie advancing out of the women's 60 meter hurdles prelims by running an 8.45, which marks a new season best. Later in the finals, Okorie capped her day off with a sixth-place finish, running an 8.48.
In the women's 400 meters, senior Ranae McKenzie led the Wildcats in the event by running a personal best 54.71 out of the third heat, which led to her eighth-place finish.
