Mar 16, 2019 | Track & Field
FORT WORTH, Texas – In their first meet of the 2019 outdoor season, the Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams claimed six event victories at the TCU Invitational at Lowdon Track Complex in Fort Worth, Texas on Saturday.
Winning two events in the field and six events on the track, the Wildcats found a pair of event wins from redshirt freshman Kassidy Johnson in the women's 1,500 meters and 800 meters, while senior Kurt Loevenstein won the men's 1,500 meters and the women's 4x400 meter claimed the relay title. In the field, senior Brett Neelly took the men's shot put, while junior Helene Ingvaldsen won her season debut in the women's hammer throw.
In the women's 800 meters, Johnson, along with redshirt freshman Alex Ferguson and sophomore Cayli Hume made their outdoor debuts in the event, where the trio placed first through third in the event. Led by Johnson's winning time of 2:09.97, Ferguson crossed the finish just behind Johnson in 2:10.46 to place second, while Hume placed third in 2:13.74.
"I was impressed with Kassidy Johnson, who ran the 1,500, 800 and 4x400 today, she showed a lot of heart," Assistant Coach Ryun Godfrey said. "In the 800, her and Alex (Ferguson) really pushed each other which was encouraging to see."
Johnson's victory in the 800 meters came after winning the 1,500 meters earlier in the day, where she finished in 4:33.20, over seven seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
In the field events, the Wildcats got their first victory from Ingvaldsen, who won the women's hammer throw with a throw of 58.14m/190-09. Ingvaldsen's winning throw came on her fourth attempt, as she led four individuals to place in the top five overall, including a personal best from sophomore Taylor Latimer, who marked a throw of 55.18m/181-00.
Latimer, who competed in three events on Saturday, found a new personal best in the women's shot put where she threw 15.79m/51-09.75 to place second overall. Latimer's throw improves upon her previous best of 15.42m/50-07.25 set at last year's Kansas Relays, moving her into sixth all-time in K-State outdoor history.
Also recording the second-best throw of his career, junior Logan Wolfley unleashed a throw of 63.42m/208-01 on his third attempt in the men's javelin on Saturday, placing him second in the event. Wolfley's career-best throw came at the Big 12 Outdoor Championship a season ago, where he placed fourth with a throw of 64.83m/212-08.
In the men's 1,500 meters, senior Kurt Loevenstein led the Wildcats to place six individuals in the top seven overall, led by Loevestein's winning time of 3:57.21. Sophomore Ethan Powell placed second in 3:57.45, while Keegan Donahue placed fourth in 3:59.20 and Dylan Brenneman placed fifth in 4:01.67. Sophomore Noah Stevenson set a new personal best in the event by running a 4:04.00 to place sixth, while senior Joe Gorthy also ran a personal best 4:04.04 to place seventh.

Next weekend, K-State will travel to San Diego, California to compete in the 41st Annual Aztec Invitational on March 22-23, hosted by San Diego State University. The Wildcats will then return to the State of Texas for the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas on March 27-30, as part of an eight-meet road trip for the Wildcats to start the outdoor season.
