MANHATTAN, Kansas – The Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams will be in action for their second meet of the outdoor season this weekend, as the Wildcats compete in the 41st Annual Aztec Invitational on March 21-23 at the SDSU Sports Deck in San Diego, California.
The Aztec Invitational, which is in its 41st running, begins on Thursday with the men's decathlon and heptathlon at 1:00 p.m. CT, before beginning the open and invitational competitions on Friday at 10:00 a.m. CT and on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. CT. The collegiate competition includes Air Force, Arizona, BYU, Loyola-Marymount, Nevada, Oregon, San Diego, UCLA, Utah and Wisconsin, among others.
This year marks the first time since 2011 in which the Wildcats have competed at the Aztec Invitational. K-State is coming off its first meet of the season at the TCU Invitational on March 16, where the Wildcats claimed six event victories and a number of solid performances.
Brett Neelly began his senior campaign on a high note, winning the shot put at the TCU Invitational by throwing the second-best mark in the NCAA of 19.40m/63-07.75. Neelly's throw is also the second-best of his career, after throwing the No. 3 mark in K-State outdoor history of 19.59m/64-03.25 at the Texas Tech Shootout in 2018.
In addition to Neelly's victory in the shot put, redshirt freshman Kassidy Johnson ran to victories in the women's 800 meters and 1,500 meters. Johnson ran a time of 2:09.97 in the 800 meters to win the race, followed by redshirt freshman Alex Ferguson and sophomore Cayli Hume in second and third, respectively.
This weekend, the Wildcats will be represented by senior Max Estill and junior Kyle Parr in the men's decathlon, which begins on Thursday. Throughout the three-day competition, 24 Wildcats will be in action, with the K-State men's and women's 4x400 meter relay teams on Saturday.
The Aztec Invitational marks the second competition of the outdoor season for the Wildcats, as they compete in six consecutive meets outside the state of Kansas. The Wildcats make their home debut at R.V. Christian Track at the Ward Haylett Invitational on May 4 in Manhattan, Kansas.
