Mar 28, 2019 | Track & Field

AUSTIN, Texas – Four Wildcats opened competition for the Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams at the 92nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas on Thursday, where sophomores Shaelyn Ward and Ethan Powell each set personal bests in their respective events.

In the women's hammer throw, a duo of Wildcats, junior Helene Ingvaldsen and Ward, took to the hammer throw circle, where Ward began her competition with a personal best throw of 57.04m/187-02. Her throw went on to place her 16th overall, besting her previous best of 56.90m/186-08 set at the Texas Tech Shootout last season, while Ingvaldsen went on to place 10th with a throw of 60.83m/199-07.

Later in the day in the men's javelin throw, junior Logan Wolfley placed 11th behind a throw of 57.56m/188-10 which came on his third attempt. The throw for Wolfley comes after placing second at the TCU Invitational on March 16 with a throw of 63.42m/208-01.

In the last event on the track for the day, the men's 5,000 meter final, Powell looked to make a strong season debut in the event. Through the first 3,000 meters, Powell was placed in the top-five of the lead pack, before making his move in the final laps, where he would move into second. In the last 400 meters, Powell was able to fight off Garrett Cortez of Incarnate Word to place second overall in 14:38.35, which sets a new personal best and places him first in the Big 12 in the event so far this season.

K-State will be back in action at the 92nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Friday, beginning at 9:00 a.m. The Wildcats will be represented in a number of track events, including three relay events, while also competing in several field events.
