Three Wildcats Set Personal Bests on Friday
Apr 12, 2019 | Track & Field
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams began the Triton Invitational in San Diego, California and K.T. Woodman Classic in Wichita, Kansas on Friday, where Ashley Petr, Dylan Brenneman and Keegan Donahue set personal bests in their respective events.
Petr and the Wildcats kicked off the competition on Friday at the Triton Invitational in the women's hammer throw, where Petr led the K-State hammer throwers by placing 12th overall. Petr recorded a throw of 55.41m/181-09 on her third and final attempt, while sophomore Shaelyn Ward finished right behind her in 13th.
In the women's discus competition, Petr picked up her second personal best of the day, launching a throw of 54.09m/177-05 on her third attempt, besting her previous best of 53.17m/174-05, which still stands as the sixth-best throw in K-State outdoor history. Petr went on to place 10th overall in the discus invitational competition, while sophomore Taylor Latimer placed 11th overall in the women's discus open competition with a throw of 48.43m/158-10.
"She (Ashley Petr) has really worked hard. She didn't have the performance she would have liked two weeks ago, so it has really been building for a while and it's good for her to bounce back in the discus," Assistant Coach Nathan Ott said.
At the K.T. Woodman Classic in Wichita, a pair of Wildcats set new career-bests in the men's 1,500 meters, with Donahue placing fifth overall by running a 3:55.47, while Brenneman clocked a 3:56.20 to place sixth overall and win his heat. Donahue and Brenneman's times are the two fastest K-State times in the event this season.
In the women's 5,000 meters, junior Anna Keeley ran a controlled race, where she led her heat for the majority of the race, leading to a time of 19:05, which is just off her personal best of 19:02.14 set at the 2017 Emporia State Relays.
The Wildcats will return to the Triton Invitational and K.T. Woodman Classic on Saturday, with action beginning at 11:00 a.m. CT. After this weekend's competition, K-State will continue its outdoor season at the Michael Johnson Invitational in Waco, Texas on April 19-20.
