No. 19 Horned Frogs Level Series

Apr 19, 2019 | Baseball

MANHATTAN, Kan. – No. 19 TCU used a six-run third inning and a complete game by starter Charles King even a three-game series with K-State Friday night, 8-1, at Tointon Family Stadium.

King's only run allowed was a leadoff home run hit by Cameron Thompson. K-State (18-22, 4-7 Big 12) managed six hits off King, who moved to 3-1 on the year and snapped the Wildcats' three-game winning streak.

TCU (23-14, 6-5 Big 12) scored all eight of its runs in the first three innings, capped by a six-run third. In the frame, the Horned Frogs tallied four hits while the Wildcats committed a pair of errors. Andrew Keefer and Hunter Wolfe each registered RBI singles in the inning.

K-State starter Kasey Ford left the game after loading the bases in the third without recording an out. Reliever Jaxon Passino inherited the bases-loaded, no-out jam.

Ford took the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on three hits in two-plus innings. Passino would go on to throw a career-high four full frames, yielding three unearned runs on four hits.
Relievers Joey Martin and Luke Hauswirth kept the Frogs off the board over the final three innings, scattering a combined two hits with five strikeouts.

TCU manufactured single runs in each of the first two innings. Jake Guenther reached on a fielder's choice in the first and Wolfe made it home on an error. Adam Oviedo produced an RBI groundout in the second that scored Austin Henry, who led off the inning with a single and broke a 1-1 tie.

Thompson tied the game with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first on the first pitch he saw from King. It was Thompson's third homer in his last four games.

King retired the next 10 Wildcats he faced after allowing the leadoff home run. Thomas Hughes' one-out single in the fourth inning was the next Wildcat to reach after Thompson tied the game. King finished with six strikeouts in his first career complete game.

Zach Kokoska had the only multi-hit game for the Cats, going 2-for-4 with a double. Kokoska extended his season-long hitting streak to nine games.

Freshman Mason Crews, who came on as a defensive replacement, collected his first career hit in the ninth inning.

Henry and Wolfe each finished 2-for-5 to the Frogs.

TCU got its leadoff hitter on base in each of the first four innings and finished 4-for-22 (.182) with runners on base.

The three-game set concludes Saturday at Tointon Family Stadium at 4 p.m., and will air on ESPN3 and stream on the ESPN app. Radio coverage is available on the K-State Sports Radio Network and News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) with live streaming audio at K-StateSports.com/watch.
