K-State Looks to Keep Impressive Play Going
Apr 05, 2019 | Men's Golf
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's golf team will look to maintain its impressive spring season on Monday and Tuesday during the 2019 Tiger Invitational, played on the par-72, 7,221-yard Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Missouri. The two-day tournament consists of 36 holes on Monday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start, followed by Tuesday's final round at 8 a.m.
The Wildcats are coming off a third-place finish at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate two weeks ago, their third-consecutive tournament finishing in the top three.
"We are looking forward to competing at Missouri this weekend," head coach Grant Robbins said. "It's a great golf course that our guys are somewhat familiar with. When the conditions are right, it can yield a lot of birdies. With our length, we should have plenty of opportunities. We just need to stay patient, try to take advantage of the par 5s, and hopefully post some low scores."
Junior Ben Fernandez will be in the No. 1 slot in the scoring lineup, followed by senior Jeremy Gandon, junior Jacob Eklund, senior Roland Massimino and freshman Will Hopkins. Senior JC Campbell will join the team and compete as an individual. Eklund enters the event posting three-straight top-10 finishes, including a tie for second at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular. Gandon won the latter event and also tied for sixth at the Seminole Intercollegiate, while Massimino has four-straight top-20 finishes with his best being a tie for eighth at the Colleton River Collegiate.
This is K-State's second year of competing in the Tiger Invitational. Last season, the Wildcats finished second by shooting a 14-under par 850. Gandon and Massimino both carded a 3-under par 213 to tie for ninth.
Joining the Wildcats in Missouri will be Central Arkansas, Drake, Hutchinson Community College, Illinois State, tournament host Missouri, Missouri State, Morehead State, Oral Roberts, SIUE, South Dakota, South Dakota State, Southern Illinois, No. 35 TCU, and UMKC.
