Apr 07, 2019 | Track & Field
TEMPE, Ariz. – On the final day of competition at the 40th Sun Angel Classic, the Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams won three events and posted three NCAA top-10 performances to conclude their weekend in Tempe, Arizona on Saturday.
In the men's high jump competition, last year's NCAA outdoor Champion Tejaswin Shankar made his season debut in the event, though it did not come easy. Shankar recorded a pair of misses at 2.15m/7-00.50, before clearing the bar on his last attempt, which ultimately won him the event.
After his clearance at 2.15m/7-00.50, Shankar cleared 2.20m/7-02.50 and 2.25m/7-04.50 on his second attempt. Shankar then went on to attempt 2.30m/7-06.50, though he could not clear the height. Shankar's clearance of 2.25m/7-04.50 is the second-best of his collegiate outdoor career and ranks second in the NCAA this season.
On the track in the women's premiere 800 meters, redshirt freshman Kassidy Johnson ran the third-fastest 800-meter time in K-State outdoor history, running a 2:04.45 to place as the third collegian in the event. Johnson made her move on the final backstretch of the race, before finishing strong on the curve and into the homestretch. Her 2:04.45 ranks fifth in the NCAA entering this weekend, with the top two times coming in the same race.
In the women's open 800 meters, sophomore Cayli Hume ran a controlled race out of the first heat, capturing the lead early and not giving it up. Hume went on to cut over 5 seconds off her previous personal best of 2:13.74, clocking a 2:08.63 on Saturday to win the event. Redshirt freshman Alex Ferguson also ran a personal best time of 2:09.56, as the Wildcats placed two individuals in the top three of the event.
Making her season debut in the women's 400-meter hurdles, senior Ranae McKenzie looked to pick up where she left off last season, where she placed fifth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the event. On Saturday, McKenzie ran the sixth-fastest time in the country by clocking a 57.58 to win the event.
In the men's 400 meters, freshman Antoni Hoyte-Small and junior Justin Davis each set personal bests in the event, including Hoyte-Small's 46.92, which placed him third overall in the competition, while Davis finished sixth in 47.53.
Between the men's long jump and 100 meters, senior Tom Pyle recorded two personal best performances on Saturday, where he ran a 10.87 in the men's 100 meters to place 11th, before jumping a new personal best 7.42m/24-04.25 in the long jump, a mark he hit on two jumps.
The Wildcats closed out the Sun Angel Classic with the men's and women's 4x400 meter relay, where the K-State women's team of McKenzie, Lauren Taubert, Lavaun Stephenson and Ferguson finished third overall in 3:40.09. The K-State men's team of Davis, Hoyte-Small, Nick Albus and Kurt Loevenstein followed by placing fourth with a season-best time of 3:11.98.
K-State will split for the Triton Invitational in San Diego, California on April 11-13 and the K.T. Woodman Classic in Wichita, Kansas on April 13. The trip to Wichita marks the first in the state of Kansas for the Wildcats this outdoor season, before competing in Manhattan at the Ward Haylett Invitational on May 4.
