K-State Women Place Second, Men Fourth at Big 12 Outdoors

NORMAN, Okla.– The Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up competition at the 2019 Big 12 Outdoor Championship on Sunday, as the K-State women placed second by scoring a program record 156.5 points, while the K-State men placed fourth with 85 points at the John Jacobs Track and Field Complex in Norman, Oklahoma.
"We clearly had a lot of tremendous performances. The thing I am most proud of is that we competed so unbelievably well across the board," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. "I just think we have a special group of people who are part of the program. It's hard to put into words just how hard the teams competed."
The Wildcats added two Big 12 Champions on Sunday, including Ranae McKenzie (400-meter hurdles) and Shardia Lawrence (triple jump), while the Wildcats set nine K-State top-10 marks and several personal bests on Sunday.
The Texas Tech men claimed the men's competition with 164 points, while the Texas women won the women's team competition with 172 points.
In the women's triple jump, the Wildcats scored 20 points in the event, behind the No. 2 mark in K-State history of 13.72m/45-00.25, which came on her third attempt. Needing a big jump to qualify for the event finals, junior Konstantina Romaiou followed Lawrence by jumping the No. 5 mark in K-State history of 13.33m/43-09, solidifying her spot in the finals.
With three individuals in the event finals, Lawrence's preliminary jump of 13.72m/45-00.25 went on to win her the title, which marks her second-career Big 12 outdoor title. Romaiou placed as the event runner-up, with her third jump marking a career-best, while junior Taishia Pryce placed seventh overall with a leap of 12.90m/42-04.
In the women's 400-meter hurdles, McKenzie, of Manchester, Jamaica, successfully defended her Big 12 title in the event from a year ago, running a 56.73 to become the first Wildcat to ever repeat in the event. Along with McKenzie, junior Lauren Taubert placed at the top of the podium, finishing second with a personal best 58.10, which ranks fifth in K-State outdoor history.
Along with the two K-State Big 12 Champions, the Wildcats 15 Wildcats placed in the top-five of their respective events on Sunday, including six runner-up finishes.
In the men's and women's discus, senior Brett Neelly and junior Ashley Petr each placed second in their respective event, with Neelly tossing a huge lifetime best of 57.36m/188-02, while Petr threw the third best mark in K-State history of 56.32m/184-09. Junior Cameron Lewis and sophomore Colins Echols also found the podium in the men's discus, as Lewis threw a personal best of 53.39m/175-01 to place fifth, while Echols placed eighth.
In the women's 4x100 meter relay, the Wildcats pulled off the third-fastest 4x100 meter relay time in K-State history to finish as the runner-up in the event in 44.33. The 4x100 was made up of junior Akia Guerrier, senior Asha Cave, junior Taisha Pryce and Ranae McKenzie.
The Wildcats also had a big day in the women's high jump, as the Wildcats scored 12 points in the event, including a second-place finish from Clare Gibson. Gibson, of Perth, Australia, came up with some clutch clearances, including a third attempt clearance of 1.80m/5-10.75, which would place her second overall. Senior Shanae McKenzie also got on the podium with a fifth-place jump of 1.72m/5-07.75.
Redshirt freshman Kassidy Johnson also made history on Sunday, running the eighth-fastest women's 1,500 meter time in K-State history, running a 4:20.28 to place fourth overall in the event.
In the men's 200 meters, junior Jullane Walker put on a show by running the fifth-fastest time in K-State outdoor history of 20.78, which placed him second overall in the event. Walker also scored points in the men's 100 meter final, coming in fourth in 10.35.
Next, the Wildcats will compete at the NCAA West Preliminaries in Sacramento, California on May 23-25. The declared top-48 individuals and top-24 relay events will compete at the meet, which will be announced this week.
