Cliff Rovelto Named Big 12 Women’s Outdoor Coach of the Year
May 16, 2019 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto was named the 2019 Big 12 Outdoor Women's Coach of the Year, the league office announced on Thursday, after Rovelto led the Wildcat women to their highest point total at the Big 12 Championship in program history.
The honor marks the third consecutive Coach of the Year award for Rovelto and the fifth of his career during the outdoor season. Rovelto has the most women's outdoor coach of the year among active Big 12 coaches and tied for the second-most all-time with Texas A&M's Pat Henry (5), behind only Texas' Beverly Kearney (7).
This season, Rovelto led the No. 14 K-State women to score the most points (156.5) at the Big 12 Outdoor Championship in program history and the most points by a team runner-up in Big 12 history.
The 156.5 points scored at the Big 12 Championship meet was the result of an all-around team effort by the Wildcats that saw 19 individuals score points throughout the meet. The K-State women totaled five individual Big 12 Champions, including seniors Ranae McKenzie (400-meter hurdles) and Shardia Lawrence (triple jump), juniors Helene Ingvaldsen (hammer throw) and Taishia Pryce (long jump) and sophomore Taylor Latimer (shot put).
Rovelto becomes just the third women's head coach to three-peat as Big 12 Outdoor Coach of the Year and the first since Henry won five-straight from 2007-11.
Rovelto has also led the Wildcats to national recognition, as the K-State women have ranked in the top-25 of the USTFCCCA Ratings Index for 25 consecutive weeks. The Wildcats earned a season-best No. 11 ranking in the week three poll.
K-State will continue its 2019 campaign on May 23-25 in Sacramento, California, as select Wildcats will compete in the NCAA West Preliminary Round.
