KU Claims Sunflower Showdown Opener

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas starting pitcher Ryan Zeferjahn went 7 1/3 inning while striking out eight in the Jayhawks' 10-0 win over K-State in the series opener of the Dillons Sunflower Showdown Friday night at Hoglund Ballpark.
Zeferjahn improved to 5-2 as he eclipsed the 100-strikeout mark on the season. The junior righty did not allow a hit until Thomas Hughes' one-out single in the fourth, as the Wildcats failed to have multiple baserunners until the eighth inning when Zeferjahn exited the game.
K-State (25-29, 8-14 Big 12) managed three singles off Zeferjahn by Hughes, Dylan Phillips and Cameron Thompson.
Six of the first seven KU (29-24, 10-21 Big 12) batters reached base as part of a five-run first. Brett Vosik, Benjamin Sems and Skyler Messinger each tallied RBI singles off Hassall in the inning.
Wildcat starter Griffin Hassall and reliever Joey Martin combined to hold KU scoreless over the final five innings, as the Jayhawks scored all seven of its 10 runs in the game's first three innings.
A two-run triple by Dylan Ditzenberger extended KU's lead out to 7-0 after three innings. Nolan Metcalf and Sems led off the frame with back-to-back singles.
Martin allowed three runs in the bottom of the eighth – all coming with two outs. Jaxx Groshans' RBI double highlighted the inning that also included a James Consentino run-scoring single.
Hassall took the loss after allowing a career-high seven runs on 11 hits, falling to 2-3. The freshman right-hander struck out two and walked one over six innings.
KU reliever Daniel Hegarty did not yield a hit over his 1 2/3 innings of work with two strikeouts.
Five Jayhawks produced two-hit games while Ditzenberger and Sems each had two RBI.
The Cats went 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position and 1-for-9 with two outs. Kansas hit .368 (7-for-19) with runners in scoring position and .400 with two gone.
