May 03, 2019 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – On the first day of the Ward Haylett Invitational, the Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams competed under the lights at newly-renovated R.V. Christian Track on Friday night, where the men and women competed in the 1,500 and 5,000 meters.
In the men's 1,500 meters, redshirt freshman Dylan Brenneman led the Way for the Wildcats, running a personal best 3:54.20 to place second overall, besting his time of 3:55.48 set at the Michael Johnson Invitational two weeks ago. Following Brenneman, junior Keegan Donahue came in fourth place in 3:56.06, while senior Joe Gorthy finished tenth in 4:10.27.
"It was a really cool experience to be out here under the lights on the brand-new track," Gorthy said. "It was my last race at home at K-State, it was awesome to come out and break in the new track and do it with my teammates."
Competing unattached, K-State freshman Cooper Schroeder set a big personal best in the men's 5,000 meters on Friday, placing second overall in 14:35.82. Schroeder's time of 14:35.82 dips under the USATF Junior National Qualifying standard of 14:40.00.
In the women's 1,500 meters, Wildcat Cara Melgares, competing unattached, won the race by running a personal best 4:32.51, which breaks her personal best of 4:33.95 set at the Roadrunner Invitational a season ago.
The 2019 Ward Haylett Invitational continues on Saturday with field events beginning at 10:00 a.m. CT, followed by events on the track at 1:00 p.m. Saturday's Ward Haylett Invitational also features a senior day ceremony, which will take place at 12:30 p.m. Admission to the meet is free.
