MANHATTAN, Kansas - In an announcement by the state of Kansas Sports Hall of Fame, former K-State standouts Bob Chipman (basketball) and Lauren Goehring Cost (volleyball) have been selected as members of the 58th Anniversary Class of 2019, which will be enshrined in ceremonies on Sunday, October 6, at Kansas Star Casino.
With the two new members, the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame now includes 51 representatives with ties to K-State, while the 2019 induction class of 13 raises the total overall number of inductees into the hall of fame to 299.
Chipman, originally from Flint, Michigan, was a two-time letter winner in basketball at K-State while playing for Kansas Sports Hall of Fame inductee Jack Hartman. Chipman helped lead the Wildcats to two Elite Eight appearances in 1972 and 1973.
Following his playing career in Manhattan, Chipman served as an assistant men's basketball coach at Washburn for three seasons before becoming head coach in 1979.
Chipman led the Ichabods for 38 years and posted a career record of 808-352 (.697). He is one of only 25 coaches in college basketball history with over 800 wins. Chipman led Washburn to the 1987 NAIA national title and an NCAA Division II runner-up finish in 2001.
He was a three-time Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) Coach of the Year recipient. During his time with Washburn, Chipman mentored 23 All-Americans. In 2004, Chipman was inducted into the Washburn Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004 and the playing floor at Washburn's Lee Arena is named Bob Chipman Court.
Goehring Cost, a product of Fossil Ridge, Texas, and a four-time letter winner in volleyball, was a 2003 First Team All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and was named the 2003 Big 12 Player of the Year while guiding the program to the 2003 Big 12 crown and a Sweet 16 appearance in the 2003 NCAA Tournament. She is the only player in school history to achieve either milestone.
Goehring Cost continues to have her name scattered across the K-State volleyball record books, as she is in the top 10 in school history in career kills with 1,212, career hitting percentage at .354, and career block assists with 380. She carded a pair of triple-triple seasons (100+ kills, digs, and blocks) in the 2001 and 2003 campaigns.
In addition to her All-American honor, Goehring Cost collected a pair of All-Big 12 First Team citations and was a three-time Academic All-Big 12 selection. In 2013, Goehring Cost was inducted into the K-State Athletics Hall of Fame.
The K-State honorees are joined in the induction Class of 2019 by former Kansas NCAA swimming champion Tammy Thomas Ammons (Lawton, Oklahoma), former Kansas Wesleyan coach Gene Bissell (North Royalton, Ohio), former Kansas men's basketball All-American and NBA veteran Nick Collison (Iowa Falls, Iowa), former Arkansas men's basketball standout and NBA champion Scott Hastings (Independence), former Wichita State men's basketball standout and ABA veteran Warren (Armstrong) Jabali (Kansas City, Missouri), former Washburn men's basketball All-American Tom Meier (Topeka), former Wichita State baseball standout and MLB veteran Mike Pelfrey (Wichita), former Wichita State baseball standout and MLB veteran Nate Robertson (Wichita), former UCLA men's basketball standout Fred Slaughter (Topeka), former professional soccer coach Roy Turner (Liverpool, United Kingdom) and former Florida State football and NFL standout Kamerion Wimbley (Wichita).
