Ashley Petr Earns Second-Career Big 12 Athlete of the Week Honor
May 08, 2019 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Throwing a personal best 55.90m/183-05 in the women's discus at the Ward Haylett Invitational on Saturday, Kansas State track and field junior Ashley Petr earned her second-career Big 12 Athlete of the Week award, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Â
"I think things are lining up well for her, being at home, she had that comfortability and it just let her settle in and get some good throws out," Assistant Coach Nathan Ott said of Petr's performance. "I think she's capable of that on a consistent basis. She's just been building up really well and working hard."
Â
Petr, a native of Hastings, Nebraska, entered the Ward Haylett Invitational with a personal best throw of 54.09m/177-05 in the discus, before she unleashed two throws over 55 meters on her final two attempts on Saturday. On her final throw, Petr reached a career-best throw of 55.90m/183-05, which went on to win her the event by over four meters and place her third all-time in K-State Outdoor history. Petr's throw also ranks 18th in the NCAA this season and third in the Big 12.

On Saturday, Petr became the third K-State woman of the season to win the award, following Lauren Taubert on April 10 and Ranae McKenzie on April 24.

This weekend, the Wildcats will compete at the Big 12 Outdoor Championship in Norman, Oklahoma on May 10-12, as both K-State teams look to repeat a historic showing at the meet a season ago. The meet kicks off on Friday with the combined events, as the meet will stream live on FloTrack, accessible with a paid subscription.
