Three Wildcats Medal at Jamaica National Championships

MANHATTAN, Kan.– The Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams had a busy weekend of competition, as seven individuals competed between the Jamaican, Barbados and USATF U20 Championships, where seniors Shardia Lawrence and Shanae McKenzie and junior Taishia Pryce claimed medals at the Jamaica Senior National Championships.
Pryce, competing in the women's long jump, earned a runner-up finish in the event by jumping 6.41m/21-00.50 on her third attempt, placing second behind only Tissanna Hickling, who jumped 6.78m/22-03. Lawrence followed up Pryce's performance on Sunday, jumping 13.83m/45-04.50 in the women's triple jump finals, placing her third overall. Lawrence jumped over 13.50 meters on three of her attempts, including her final jump of 13.83m/45-04.50 that earned her a third-place finish.
In the women's high jump finals at the Jamaica National Senior Championships, Shanae McKenzie recorded a top-three finish by clearing 1.70m/5-07 in the event, while former Wildcat Kim Williamson won the title with a winning jump of 1.80m/5-10.75.
Competing in the women's 400-meter hurdles, senior Ranae McKenzie earned a spot in the event finals on Thursday evening, where she ran a 57.94 to earn the final qualifying spot for Friday's event finals. On Friday, McKenzie clocked the eighth-fastest time in the event finals, running a 56.55 to close out her senior campaign, which was her third-fastest time recorded this season.
In the men's long jump finals at the Jamaica National Senior Championships on Saturday night, junior Jullane Walker found his best jump of the evening on his second attempt, where he jumped 7.41m/24-03.75 to put him in the event finals. Walker would jump over 7.00 meters on his next three attempts, with his best jump of 7.41m/24-03.75 placing him eighth overall in the event.
At the USATF U20 Championships on Saturday, freshman Cooper Schroeder competed in the men's 5,000 meters, where he ran a 15:12.25 in the hot Florida conditions. Schroeder, who competed unattached during his freshman campaign with the Wildcats, earned his USATF U20 Championship qualifier by running 14:35.82 at the Ward Haylett Invitational on May 3.
Freshman Antoni Hoyte-Small also capped a strong freshman campaign this weekend, competing at the Barbados National Championships in St. Michael, Barbados. On Friday, Hoyte-Small ran a 47.40 in the preliminary round of the 400 meters, qualifying for the finals with the fourth-fastest time. Hoyte-Small returned for the 400 finals on Saturday by improving on his time, running a 46.95 to place fourth overall. Hoyte-Small's time was the second-fastest of his season, after running a 46.92 at the Sun Angel Classic on April 6.
