K-State Rowing Named Big 12 Sportspersons of the Year
Jun 25, 2019 | Rowing
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's rowing team was named the 2018-19 Big 12 Sportspersons of the Year, the league office announced on Tuesday, after overcoming adversity and succeeding athletically, academically and in the community.
The women's rowing team become the third K-State women's Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year in the award's history, including the first since 2012-13 when K-State women's golfer Whitney Pyle won the award. The rowing team shares the women's Sportsperson of the Year award with Baylor's Lauren Cox and Iowa State's David Montgomery.
"They really leaned on each other through the tough times and that made them stronger," Head Coach Patrick Sweeney said of the team. "They went through the adversity together and they were ready to work. They could have let the situation sink them, but they didn't, they did the opposite."
The K-State women's rowing team overcame a great deal of adversity during the 2018-19 season, with the passing of senior coxswain Samantha Scott on October 27, 2018. The team remembered her with the first boat dedication in K-State program history and dedicated its season to Scott.
Through such a difficult time, the K-State Rowing team remained committed to training, their studies and service. The Wildcats finished third among Big 12 schools at the Big 12 Championship, where two Wildcat boats brought home medals. The Wildcats also swept the Sunflower Showdown against rival Kansas, won five medals at the SIRA Championships and four medals at the Sunshine State Invitational throughout the spring racing season.
Within K-State Athletics service work, the rowing team members charted 414 hours of community service, active led and facilitated work with initiatives such as Cats in the Classroom, Cats for Cans, Tip Off for TP and National Girls and Women in Sports day, among others. The team worked together to address issues like food insecurity, eliminating waste and volunteering time with the elderly population.
Academically, the Wildcats continued excellence by placing 25 individuals on the Academic All-Big 12 team, while senior Molly Ross was awarded Big 12 Co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year. During the spring 2019 semester, the Wildcats placed 42 individuals on the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll, including 14 students with a 4.0 GPA, while also maintaining a team GPA of 3.337.
The Sportsperson of the Year Awards began in 2000-01 to annually recognize student-athletes who displayed extraordinary degree of sportsmanship, community service and academic achievement. This year's winners were selected by a media panel.
