AUSTIN, Texas – The Kansas State men's track and field team opened day one of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas on Wednesday as junior Aaron Booth stands in 10th place with 3,952 points after day one of the men's decathlon, while junior Jullane Walker placed 19th in the men's long jump final.
Booth, of Auckland, New Zealand, set a personal best day one score of 3,952 points in the decathlon, while setting personal bests in three of five events. Booth's day one score tops his previous best set at the Big 12 Championship on May 10, where he scored 3,887 points on the first day of decathlon competition.
The Wildcats got started by running in the rain in the men's decathlon 100 meters, as Booth crossed the line in 11.12 to earn 834 points, while Fassina followed in 11.38 to earn 778 points.
Booth gained an advantage in the long jump portion of the decathlon, jumping 7.22m/23-08.25 on his final attempt. The jump was a personal best for Booth, placing him sixth overall in the event and moving him into seventh in the overall standings with 1,700 points through two events.
In the decathlon high jump, Booth continued with another personal best by jumping 1.95m/6-04.75 to earn 758 points. Booth previously jumped a personal best of 1.93m/6-04 at the Big 12 Championship, where he went on to place as the decathlon runner-up. Fassina was able to clear 1.89m/6-02.25 on his third attempt to earn 705 points.
The men's decathletes closed out day one of the decathlon in the 400 meters, where Booth recorded his final personal best of the day by clocking a 49.73 to win his heat and earn 827 points. The men's decathlon will continue on Thursday beginning at 1:00 p.m. CT, as the decathletes look to finish strong in the final five events.
In the men's long jump, Walker earned himself a 19th-place finish in his first-career NCAA Outdoor Championship, where he reached 7.44m/24-05 on his second and third attempts. Walkers jumps were not enough to get him into the final, as he finishes the season with the eighth-best jump in K-State outdoor history (7.78m/25-06.25).
Thursday marks day two of competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, as the women begin semifinal and final action, while the decathletes finish off their competition.
